Elaine has covered this perfectly, but I wanted to add my own thoughts too. Several months ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Prof Simon Doherty (Queen's University Belfast) and Dr Elaine Cloutman-Green BEM for a podcast series that had been a long time in the making with ☮Agnieszka Jagiello-Johnstone FCIM, MA and Anastasija Šļapina as part of Beckman Coulter Diagnostics series on the fascinating topic of One Health - the unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimise the health of people, animals, and ecosystems. Sadly as the last episode was released before Christmas we received the sad news that Prof Simon Doherty passed away after a short illness in Belfast. When I first met Simon over teams we had a great chat, got totally sidetracked and nattered about lots of interesting topics! He said hello to the very curious dog I was fostering at the time, who must have sensed he was a vet and gave me some pointers! As with any production or meeting of academics and clinicians, it is always tricky to get a time that works for everyone, but we eventually found an hour that was going to work for Elaine, Simon and I on - that hour became two and a bit because the conversation just kept flowing and both willingly gave up their time on a Friday night to share their insights on One Health. From tales as to why he tells undergraduates that getting rid of ifor williams trailers (other trailer brands also exist) or any trailer from Northern Ireland would be a great intervention in animal health because you would stop diseases moving about the country to how warmly he spoke about the relationships he builds with farmers and animal owners to deliver interventions around antibiotic use reduction or tackling zoonotic disease - he lived and breathed the principles of One Health. It was great to observe the knowledge shared between himself and Elaine, as she spoke about companion animals of her patients, knew more about pigeons than she thought was possible, and the joys of a risk assessment on herds of reindeer when they used to visit hospitals at Christmas! From the plan to produce two, maybe three episodes we ended up with six because the content of the interviews was so rich. The world, both human and animal, is a poorer place without his knowledge and expertise. Survived by his wife Anne and children Callum, Lewis and Isla, who he spoke fondly of in the calls that we had and anecdotes he shared - thinking of them. You can access all episodes here, and I strongly suggest you do listen as a tribute to Simon - it was very informative and engaging. https://lnkd.in/d_t6bKWN

This one was a challenge to pull together but I really wanted to honour the way that Simon Doherty impacted me, even though I didn't know him very well or for very long. Both Julie Ann Lough, Ph.D. and I came away from these sessions having learnt so much, so I wanted to make sure that his words are spread widely to ensure that he inspires others in the way he inspired me.
