About us

The Ceva Wildlife Research Fund is an endowment fund aimed at financing applied research projects on wild animals to better control the risk of zoonoses, which is one of Ceva’s key commitments. This fund, chaired by Dr. Marc Prikazsky and managed by Dr. Pierre-Marie Borne, stands out for its focus on wildlife health, a field often neglected due to its lack of economic viability. Registered as charity, the fund is a separate legal entity from Ceva Santé Animale, with a scientific committee of seven members responsible for selecting, evaluating, and monitoring projects. The main missions of the fund are to preserve biodiversity, combat zoonoses, and promote better interactions between wildlife, farm animals, and humans. The projects focus on developing innovative solutions, such as vaccines, to limit the spread of interspecies diseases and reduce the risk of transmission to humans. The results of these projects are expected within three to five years.

  • 🌟 As we close the chapter on 2024, the Ceva Wildlife Research Fund sends its warmest wishes to the community of wildlife actors! This year marks the end of our second year of operation, and we are very proud of the journey so far. We take pride in supporting 12 impactful research projects and partnerships around the world, with more to come in the future. Our participation in events such as the Ewda Student Chapter in Stralsund this past September has been a fantastic opportunity to engage with inspiring individuals, support meaningful initiatives, and exchange ideas. It has been a true pleasure, and we are eager to join more events like this in the future 🌱 Looking ahead, 2025 will bring exciting new content on this platform, offering even more ways to connect with our work and our vision. None of this would be possible without the invaluable support of contributors and partners who empower us to deliver on our mission. From all of us at the Ceva Wildlife Research Fund, we wish you a joyful holiday season and a successful start to the new year. Let’s continue to shape the future of wildlife health together. Thank you for being part of this journey! 🙌 Ecole Nationale Vétérinaire de Toulouse - University of the Sunshine Coast - CNRS - Pairi Daiza - IHU – Méditerranée Infection - Wild Entrust - African Pangolin Working Group #Wildlife #Biodiversity #OneHealth #OnePlanet

  • THE TEMMINCK'S PANGOLIN, PART 1 | A conservation challenge 🌱 Studying the Temminck's pangolin in its natural habitat is far more complex than it seems. Jesse Berndt, a PhD student at the University of Pretoria, is studying various aspects of Temminck’s pangolin that have been retrieved off the illegal wildlife trade and reintroduced back into Zululand where they were locally extinct for 4 decades. In the Munywana Conservancy, home to the famous Big 5, Jessie overcomes numerous obstacles to track pangolins reintroduced in the region. The challenges are significant: > Tracking pangolins with custom-designed telemetry units across various habitats (savannah, mountains, dense bush) uses VHF (Very High Frequency), satellite, and LoRa (Long Range & Ultra-High Frequency) technologies to gather valuable data on behavior, movement, territory, and interactions. > Exploring and understanding their burrows which can be deep in the ground, in rocky crevices or in caves and sometimes shared with some other occupants such as porcupines, snakes or warthogs, > Avoiding unexpected encounters with lions, elephants, buffalos or other potentially dangerous animals. This adventure is paving the way for greater understanding of a secretive and cryptic species and strengthening conservation efforts. Well done, Jessie! Jessie Berndt is sponsored by the Ceva Wildlife Research Fund, African Pangolin Working Group, and Munywana Conservancy Conservation Fund. • THE AFRICAN PENGUIN I Protecting the African penguin, an urgent challenge 🐧 The African penguin (Spheniscus demersus), a symbol of South Africa's coastline, has been declared “Critically Endangered” in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species after their last assessment in July 2024, reflecting a worsening situation compared to their previous status of “Endangered” in 2020. Major threats include reduced fish stocks, pollution, and the emerging danger of highly pathogenic #avianinfluenza (HPAI). 🔹 In response, Ceva Wildlife Research Fund, in partnership with Pairi Daiza and Sciensano, has launched a preventive vaccination campaign against the virus. This initiative aims to shield these vulnerable birds from epidemics and explore an innovative approach to active conservation. 🔹 This vaccination program reflects the commitment of the lead veterinarian, Alicia Quiévy, to safeguard vulnerable species such as the African penguin in response to the 2022 HPAI outbreaks using a novel approach that stands as a powerful example for efforts to protect biodiversity in facing global health crises. • At the Ceva Wildlife Research Fund, we are honored to support efforts addressing wildlife health challenges, many of which are highlighted in this powerful video by the World Organisation for Animal Health. Most of the species and issues mentioned are areas where the Ceva Wildlife Research Fund actively contributes. Species like the Tasmanian devil and pangolins, as well as diseases like avian influenza, are central to our applied research initiatives. Stay tuned to discover more information about our projects 😊 #CevaWildlifeResearchFund #AnimalHealth #Biodiversity #OneHealth #OnePlanet

The Tasmanian devil? Humans? What animal is threatened by animal disease today and what does it mean for these #wildlife populations? Recently, we interrupted a meeting of experts of the Working Group on Wildlife to ask them about their work and the what threatens wildlife today. The Group celebrates 30 years of expertise this year. Featuring: marcela uhart, William Karesh, Jonathan Sleeman, Gavier-Widén Dolores, Rupert Woods and Dr Anna Wong

  • ZOONOSES I The interconnectedness of wildlife, domesticated animals, and humans has never been more evident 🐦 The intensification of these interactions has heightened the risk of disease transmission between species. 🔹 Zoonoses - diseases transmitted from animals to humans - and reverse zoonoses, the emerging threat of human-to-animal transmission, pose significant challenges to public health, biodiversity and human activities. 🔹 Understanding these interfaces is crucial—not just to prevent potential outbreaks or spillovers to humans, but also to protect endangered species. Many wildlife populations already face pressures from habitat loss, climate change, and human activities, making disease another critical threat to their survival. 🔹 A comprehensive approach to studying these and their connections is essential. Wildlife health is a cornerstone for safeguarding ecosystems, contributing to mitigating pandemic risks, and ensuring the survival of vulnerable species. Investing in this knowledge is an investment in our shared future. Ceva Wildlife Research Fund is deeply committed to focusing efforts on these challenges 💪 By supporting applied scientific research projects in wildlife health, one of the missions of the fund is to foster progress and innovation by enhancing understanding and striving to mitigate risks at the wildlife-human-domestic animal interfaces. Through this work, we aim to protect biodiversity and contribute to a healthier, interconnected world 🌱 Learn more about our work 👉 https://lnkd.in/ekBMfm5b #Wildlife #Biodiversity #OneHealth #Oneplanet
