About us
Telecommunications reaches almost every aspect of our daily lives. Today, communities are looking for cost effective ways to expand accessibility, achieve reliability, and save precious public dollars. More and more community leaders pursue local control of connectivity through public ownership, cooperative models, and other nonprofit approaches. At MuniNetworks.org, we provide resources for those joining the movement to build broadband networks that are directly accountable to the communities they serve. Case studies, fact sheets, and video are some of the media we offer to help leaders make decisions about community owned networks. We strive to offer resources for informed decisions because we know each community is unique. Telecommunications infrastructure is essential to the health and vitality of a community. Networks must be accountable first to the needs of the community, not the short-term interests of shareholders.

With the holiday seasons officially here and digital practitioners wanting to know what is next in the fight for digital inclusion, the final Building for Digital Equity (#B4DE) event of the year is here! The popular (and free) virtual gathering will highlight important milestones in broadband over the past year and take a look ahead for what promises to be another busy year for digital inclusion practitioners across the country. As with the previous #B4DE events, the live stream will once again be sponsored by UTOPIA Fiber and co-hosted by NDIA’s Pamela Rosales and ILSR’s Community Broadband Networks Initiative Director Christopher Mitchell.

For decades, local grocery stores thrived. Then in the 1980s, the government stopped enforcing the Robinson-Patman Act, a key antitrust law. Local retailers went into a tailspin. A few chains took over. Consolidation gave rise to food deserts & a price spike. Our new graph shows the dramatic impact of this policy shift. Day 24 :: Circles The goal of this map was to only map using circles. I feel like the circle density is high enough to tell you which place we're looking at here. For this map I used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's #PLACES dataset , which I discovered during a recent work project. It pulls data from a variety of sources and includes 40 measures: chronic disease related health outcomes (12), prevention measures (7), health risk behaviors (4), disability (7), health status (3), and health-related social needs (7). Utility services threat is a measure included in health-related social needs. #30DayMapChallenge

On the US border with Mexico in south Texas, Pharr has completed a remarkable turnaround from one of the worst cities connected to the Internet to one with some of the fastest, most affordable access in the nation. We talk with one of its key architects - Jose J. Peña, CGCIO - to explain how it succeeded with Rescue Plan dollars and a local partnership with the schools. #podcast https://lnkd.in/gsgABBPi

Day 20 :: OSM Today's challenge was to use the OpenStreetMap data to map something. Since I did that on day one to highlight telecom towers in disguise, I decided to dig for a different dataset that's relevant to Institute for Local Self-Reliance's work. So I used Overpass Turbo to search for Amazon locations. Caveat - since I'm still a novice OSM user this may not be the full extent of their distribution in the US. To be sure, they are widespread and stashing goods (and our money) worldwide. Thanks again to John Nelson for the pirate theme and "old timey" labels (linked in the story map below). We had some fun making a new map of fiber built by community networks. The growth from 2017 is something. As an extra, we added places where community networks have fed grants to build, and what it would look like if every co-op built to all its members. https://lnkd.in/gVWyTfUF
