Around the world, the humanitarian actions of the #IFRC and member National Societies are powered by 17 million #volunteers. They make a difference in communities every day, supporting those in greatest need. In #Nepal, changing climate conditions have been accompanied by increasing cases of climate-sensitive diseases such as #dengue fever. Nepal Red Cross Society volunteers have been instrumental in efforts to reduce the incidence of dengue in communities shown to be at risk of an outbreak. Biva Rana Magar is one such volunteer. In 2024, she dedicated three months to supporting dengue prevention and control in the Gorkha district of Gandaki province. Biva and other volunteers worked without pause, visiting communities to educate people on dengue prevention measures. They conducted “search and destroy” campaigns, targeting mosquito breeding sites and ensuring communities maintained cleaner surroundings. Equipped with Red Cross aprons and jackets for visibility, they became trusted figures in the community, symbolizing hope, and action. Thanks to these efforts, Biva noted that people are now more focused on maintaining clean environments and adopting preventive measures, which have reduced the risk of dengue. Her relentless efforts and commitment exemplify the spirit of volunteerism that drives the #IFRC. Biva travelled to distant and sometimes hard-to-reach communities to spread awareness, proving that the collective action of individuals can bring about change. As we start 2025, we reassert our commitment to strengthening local leadership and voluntary service with NRCS, our link to the communities we serve. Happy to have been part of the Third National Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, where the Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) underscored its auxiliary role in supporting the government across all aspects of Disaster Risk Reduction and Management—from policy formulation to the implementation of plans. - Nepal Red Cross Society Executive Director, Umesh Dhakal along with Nepal Police, Nepal Army, and Armed Police Force highlighted the importance of a coordinated efforts among various agencies and levels of government during a disaster. The Critical Incident Reporting being one of such mechanism which adheres to a structured framework to ensure efficient communication, resource mobilization, and response. - NRCS AA Coordinator pramod adhikari highlighted challenges and lessons from the activation of the Early Action Protocol during the monsoon 2024. While the local government has its own system in place to activate early actions based on weather forecast information, the NRCS through IFRC Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) has access to predetermined financing to supplement the government’s plans. - DRC Program Coordinator, Alina Karki with Rumsan Chief Development Officer, Shristi Piya shared about the piloting of Rahat Application which leveraged the power of digital and block chain technology to increase efficiency and transparency in coordination and communication during monsoon 2024 activation.

Epidemics and pandemics present a considerable risk to people’s health around the world – but with effective preparedness, outbreaks can be contained, and lives saved! Due to changing weather patterns, exacerbated by the #climatecrisis, #Nepal has experienced rising cases of #dengue fever. In 2024, the Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), with support from the #IFRC, implemented early detection and vector control actions to reduce the incidence of dengue across districts of the country which were shown to be most at risk of an outbreak. In Tanahun district, #Gandaki province, NRCS volunteers identified the risk of mosquitoes breeding in old, unused tires at local mechanic garages. Understanding the urgency, the volunteers visited every garage in the communities to orient workers about the dangers posed by stagnant water in tires. NRCS volunteers encouraged garage owners and workers to dispose of unused tires and, in some cases, took the initiative to cut the tires themselves to prevent water accumulation. Their efforts not only eliminated potential breeding grounds but also raised awareness among an often-overlooked group. This approach contributed to reducing mosquito breeding in the area. #EpidemicPreparedness #EPPR #InternationalEpidemicPreparednessDay Fabrice Vandeputte David Fogden Shubhadra Devkota Shreyasi Chhetri Sofia Malmqvist Arifa Ali

#PhotoOfTheYear Of all the images we captured from our work in Nepal during 2024 this one resonated the most. A colleague from Nepal Red Cross Society stands amid the destruction caused by extreme rainfall which triggered flooding and landslides in September this year. The rainfall was unprecedented in its intensity, and affected communities that had normally not experienced such events. It demonstrated the worsening impacts of the #climatecrisis and the need for sustained investment in early warning, anticipatory action and response mechanisms. In #Nepal which is amongst the most climate fragile in the world, the work of humanitarian actors such as #IFRC has never been more relevant. We cannot step away. Recap of Day 1 of HKH DRR Hub at ICIMOD: A resounding success! Yesterday marked the launch of the HKH DRR Hub, bringing together six Regional Member Countries and senior observers from United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), United Nations ESCAP, UNDP, GLOSMOS-UNU, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC, FAO, INGOs, Academia and partners from the HKH region. We were also graced by NDRRMA Nepal where Chief Executive Anil Pokhrel provided remarks in the opening session. We delved into the global Early Warnings for All (EW4All) landscape, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the initiative through a high-level panel discussion. Thematic sessions explored the four pillars of #EW4All, highlighting best practices from our region and across the globe for scaling in the region including discussions on AI/ML, youth and innovation and sustainability of actions. A key takeaway: the need for enhanced coordination to drive the EW4All initiative forward in the Hindu Kush Himalaya; enhance understanding of complex multi-hazard events with cascading and compound impacts to lead to MH-EWS Stay tuned for more updates from the HKH DRR Hub, as Day-2 begins! #HKHDRRHub #EW4All #EarlyWarningsForAll #DRR #Resilience #HinduKushHimalaya

Happy to have hosted delegates from Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and GSMA Foundation at our office to discuss humanitarian innovations. We shared possibilities of meaning integration of technologies, some as simple as using mobile phones to deliver cash and early warning messages to more emerging ones like block-chain and Artificial Intelligence. Currently, we are partnering with Rumsan to use digital technology including block chain for a faster and more transparent way of working. Stay tuned for evaluation reports of its usage. For the past 5 years Danish Red Cross #IFRC together with the Nepal Red Cross Society, Finnish Red Cross - Suomen Punainen Risti, and Mercy Corps Nepal, funded by European Commission - ECHO, have pioneered a change process in #Nepal, supporting development of scalable, all-of-society and risk-informed approach where science, indigenous knowledge and financing has been combined that puts communities at the heart of disaster resilience. As we proudly close the STRONG in DRM project, we’re thrilled to share the incredible strides made in disaster risk management (DRM) across Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces! Focusing on Anticipatory Action, early actions, and Shock-Responsive Social Protection, our journey culminated in a national learning-sharing workshop, celebrating the collective achievements alongside NDRRMA Nepal and other key stakeholders. 🌟 Big Wins We’re Proud Of: 1. Early Warnings that Save Lives 93% of vulnerable households received flood warnings on time and 100% comprehension was achieved thanks to clear, localized messages delivered through our inclusive early warning communication channels—now established in all target municipalities, propelling the community to take proactive measures. 2. Stronger Local Governance = Safer Communities 5 out of 12 municipalities now have inclusive DRM measures in their 2024/25 budgets, developed through the active participation of 288 civil society organizations and all 12 municipalities boosted their disaster budgets by 22% on average, with seven achieving a 31% increase! These efforts directly benefited 63,056 high-risk individuals through Early Action Frameworks embedded in disaster plans. 3. Tech-Driven Solutions for Timely Response We supported the installation of 26 multi-hazard sirens across four major river basins and partnered with various organizations like ICIMOD to introduce innovative tools like the PrakopAlert App, Flood Inundation Mapping, and Youth Innovation lab for Impact-Based Forecasting Portal—empowering local governments with real-time, actionable data. Additionally, we leveraged advanced tech like the Rumsan Rahat App to deliver rapid, transparent, and efficient early action support to households, including those with persons with disabilities. 4. Building Capacity from Local to National Levels We’ve integrated Anticipatory Action into the national Disaster Risk Management (DRM) training programs with MoFAGA. To keep the learning going, we set up Communities of Practice (CoP) at the provincial and national levels. We are supporting standardization of flood risk assessment tools to improve coordination among all players. Additionally, we leveraged the Social Security Allowance (SSA) system to improve disaster response efficiency and reach the most vulnerable communities. Every achievement here was powered by collaboration and innovation. Proactive, risk-informed actions save lives and resources.
