⭐This week's #MeetTheTeam spotlight shines on Kim Warchol, our President & Founder. ⭐ ❔ We asked Kim, "How does the Dementia Capable Care Model help optimize function, quality of life, and safety for individuals with dementia??" Here’s what she had to say: "Our Dementia Capable Care Model is a framework all can use to skillfully support someone with dementia and produce a plethora of positive outcomes. The primary objective is to help someone stay successfully engaged in meaningful activity at their best ability while seeking to eliminate causes of distress. The model guides us to first learn about the person: What are their habits, routines, and preferences? Any history of trauma or phobias? We also learn what the person in care wants and needs to do each day: What are their priorities? And we assess to discover their stage of dementia: Helps us to know their abilities and challenges. With this information, we can provide dementia capable care, which means we adapt the activity, our approach, and the environment to help someone participate in meaningful life activities at the highest level of function. There are many wonderful byproducts that come from enabling someone to be an active participant in their own life. Quality of life is derived from having purpose, maintaining personhood, and feeling and being successful. Better health arises from cognitive and physical exercise. Less distress behaviors occur (e.g. anxiety and agitation) when we avoid known triggers. Safety is enhanced when we anticipate and meet the amount of supervision and assistance someone requires. In summary, great things happen when we provide dementia capable care. We make the world a better place for those living with dementia and our job becomes far more rewarding when we see the significant difference we make.”. ⭐This week's #MeetTheTeam spotlight shines on Sharon Host, one of our Global Professional Instructors. ⭐ ❔We asked Sharon, "What role do care system tools and resources play in ensuring effective implementation of dementia care training?" Here’s what she had to say: "Our Dementia Capable Care System plays a critical role by providing a framework to easily use all the concepts learned in Dementia Capable Care training. Dementia Capable Care impacts all aspects of care from communication to ADL to leisure activity and behavioral expressions. Therefore, a system of tools and resources that speak the same language offers a community a consistent way of providing daily care that is person-centered and stage informed. For example, a major concept in Dementia Capable Care training is that behavior is a form of communication and we need to observe, stop, evaluate, and respond to the situation. Our behavior management tools and resources help teams create a cohesive way of approaching behavioral communication by understanding who the person is so the team can quickly provide an individualized response. Our tools offer a way to share that with all team members which ensures consistency in responses and produces better outcomes. Having these systems and resources in place means that when an employee completes their Dementia Capable Care training, they are then able to start using the concepts immediately in an environment that supports them. Implementing Dementia Capable Care training using our tools and resources will set your community onto the path of success and well-being for people with dementia and those who serve them. Call today and get started effectively implementing dementia training into your organization”. Ready to take your dementia care skills to the next level? ⭐This week's #MeetTheTeam spotlight shines on Sharon Jackson, one of our Global Professional Instructors. ⭐ ❔ We asked Sharon, "How can dementia care training improve communication with individuals at different stages of dementia, and why does it matter?" Here’s what she had to say: "As someone moves through the stages of dementia, the ability to communicate through words declines. They often tell us what they want and need, non-verbally, using behavior and body language. One of the biggest “aha” moments participants have during our training is the realization that ALL behavior is a form of communication. The perceived negative behaviors someone with dementia may express is often a very normal reaction and a communication of distress we would ALL feel if we were in their situation. For example, before being trained I might have taken it personally that Millie yelled at me when I approached to assist her with care. But after attending Dementia Capable Care training, I now look at what Millie might be trying to tell me when she yells. I take a step back and realize she was fine before I tried to assist. I think about how I approached her. Did I gain her attention and explain how I was going to assist? Did I gain her trust and agreement? This self-reflection helps me recognize how Millie may have been communicating her fear or confusion through yelling. Understanding this I can change my approach to ensure Millie feels safe before I continue. Learning the ways someone with dementia communicates when their verbal abilities decline and learning to adapt our own communication to be sure we are understood, has tremendous value. Our participants feel empowered to a make positive impact with those they so compassionately serve". Ready to take your dementia care skills to the next level?
