Accounting Advisory Board Spotlight: Ann Mennel Current position: Chief Financial Officer at Merit Energy Company What inspired you to pursue a degree in accounting? Optionality. As I entered Mendoza, I was unsure about which path in business I wanted to pursue. Thanks to excellent advice from family and faculty, I chose accounting - a path that opened many business opportunities from investment banking, to consulting, to accounting and finance. What is some personal or professional advice you wish you knew as an undergrad? No matter where your business career takes you, success will be rooted in your ability to communicate - both verbally and in written formats. It will also be anchored by your ability to work with others, converge consensus and produce results as a team. Focus on your core business knowledge of course, but do not underestimate the soft skills you are developing while working with teams, participating in clubs and meeting with faculty. What do you enjoy most about working in this field? This answer has changed over time! In my current role, I would have to say the best part about this field is working with people. This is probably not an answer that would immediately come to mind when you think of "accounting work" but today, my job is largely focused on managing the team, providing a sounding board for issues, and thinking strategically about where our firm is headed. Historically I think that the best part about working in the accounting field is that whoever controls the numbers has influence and a good perspective for decision making. People are going to come to this team to get information, and thereby, accountants will know what is going on across a firm. Generally speaking, a good organization is going to place value in the accounting perspective, and numbers people have a seat at the table. How have you leveraged your Accounting degree as your career path evolved? Having a base understanding of financial statements, and being able to translate that into financial analysis has been critical in my roles. I have worked in public accounting (internship), investment banking, big 4 consulting, and now private equity for 20 years. I also think of accounting as problem solving and puzzle building. This general mindset of how things fit together helps me approach various challenges today - if we solve a problem one way ("Debit"), what is the impact or unintended consequence on the rest of the organization ("Credit")? Being trained to always think about both sides of an equation translates well into being a good manager and leader. Why did you choose to serve on the Accountancy Advisory Board? I want our students to understand the breadth of opportunities that the accounting education can provide! My ND accounting education has been a springboard to my success, and I want to be able to help our faculty continue to do what they do best - educate the most talented and well rounded accounting students in the market today!

Accounting Advisory Board Spotlight: Elizabeth Jensen, CPA Current position: Chief Financial Officer at Goodwill of Orange County What inspired you to pursue a degree in accounting? First, I found that I liked my accounting classes! I understood the material and did well on the exams. My professors also encouraged me to get a degree in accounting. I also have several family members who are accountants and they helped in my decision. Accounting just felt like a good fit for me. What is some personal or professional advice you wish you knew as an undergrad? First, I always tell students that a degree in accounting is worthwhile for wherever your career takes you. Having an understanding of accounting is critical whether you run your own business or become the CEO of a corporation. And every company needs accountants! You'll never be out of a job! Second, take your time learning the basics because accounting principles build on each other. When you start work, don't be in a rush to be promoted to manager or partner. Learning and experience take time. What do you enjoy most about working in this field? When I was in the audit practice after I graduated, I enjoyed the social aspect of working in a big firm. Audit teams work very closely together and it's fun to have a group of people your same age to start your career with. Now, I am the CFO of the company I work for, and I use my people skills to translate and explain the financials to my team and to our employees. How have you leveraged your Accounting degree as your career path evolved? My accounting degree is what helped me obtain my CPA license. Having a CPA license opens many doors to various career paths. I would never have guessed I'd be in my second role as CFO of a non-profit organization, but I am enjoying it! Why did you choose to serve on the Accountancy Advisory Board? I have wanted to stay connected to Notre Dame ever since I graduated, but life gets busy! My daughters are students at ND, so now was a perfect time to find a way to connect and give back to the university. I am so honored to be part of the AAB and help in any way I can.
