Gowling WLG's Global IP team took centre stage at this year's INTA 2024 Leadership Meeting in New Orleans. The practical uses, pitfalls, and critical considerations of AI technology were put squarely under the spotlight by the Gowling WLG IP Team at this year's International Trademark Association (INTA) Leadership Meeting. The four-day event saw Kate Swaine, Co-Head of Global IP for Gowling WLG, get the AI debates rolling when she took part in a fully interactive panel session scrutinising the copyrightability of AI-generated content. Discussion also included a dive into next summer's Getty Images versus Stability AI trial at the UK High Court, which promises to shed some light on the court's approach to key issues. The session wrapped with a forthright conversation around the fragmented impact and challenges of regional regulation, with all speakers noting the need to foster international co-operation, consensus and a level playing field for AI governance. Canadian Gowling WLG IP Partner Jayde Wood, also participated in the final session of the week covering the ethical and practical considerations for incorporating AI technologies in trademark practice. Speakers discussed the uses, challenges, and ethical considerations surrounding the practical adoption of AI-based technology. They noted that AI is here to stay and presents an amazing opportunity, although it is important to work together to avoiding potential pitfalls and opportunists.
