Launched in December 2020, Internet Society Pulse consolidates trusted third-party Internet measurement data from various sources into a single platform. We use the data presented here to examine Internet trends and tell data-driven stories so that policymakers, researchers, journalists, network operators, civil society groups and others can better understand the health, availability and evolution of the Internet. We encourage everyone who is interested in Internet evolution to use, analyze and share the data presented on Internet Society Pulse in their work and research.

Measuring IPv6 is challenging and requires fundamentally different approaches than IPv4. That’s why I started The IPv6 Observatory—to share data I’ve found useful while respecting user privacy. Guam’s multiple subsea cables and Internet exchange points (IXPs) have helped establish the country as an Internet connectivity hub for the Pacific. The country’s newest IXP, Guam Exchange, wants to capitalize on this regional and international connectivity to attract more content delivery networks, which would provide more cached content to the country and the region. Hosting content closer to end users and keeping local Internet traffic within a country or region increases Internet performance and reduces the cost of the Internet for end users. While 87% of all government URLs are served from domestic servers, regional differences are stark. Sub-Saharan Africa, for example, serves nearly half of its URLs from international servers, compared to less than 2% in North America. There is also significant reliance on U.S.-based servers, particularly in regions like Latin America. For instance, Mexico hosts 79% of its government URLs in the U.S., while Costa Rica relies on U.S.-based servers for half its government services.
