Who determines the value of success and also the price of the same. I then tell my customers the following: Often in life - as a person but also as an organizational unit - you have to take the unknown path to allow new things to happen. Doing the same things repeatedly is often not productive and here comes our own risk allocation into play. Risk assessment and -awareness is decisive. In one case it can be beneficial, in another it can be a hindrance to development. If we want to develop - as people and in the area of intra- and inner-organizational systems, existing usual solutions do not necessarily help. New paths show your own limits, but also provide opportunities. If you conduct a few thousand job interviews a year like I do, and have been doing so for 16 years without a break, you inevitably get a visceral cross-section of how markets move and what changes and necessary adaptations people and organizations are subject to. "What has your favorite strawberry ice cream to do with comfort zones?" Staying in old comfort zones is still conventionally overestimated, while leaving an old comfort zone, means entering a new one as a consequence. I am repeatedly beeing asked by candidates applying for positions in international business, why it is increasingly important to break with old habitual comfort zones and leaving the same as a consequence of good effort. Staying in one's own comfort zone is like eating strawberry ice cream in summer. It simply tastes good and provides us with a feeling of something secure and well-known. There is of course nothing wrong with feeling comfortable per sé, but in order to reach expectation accomplishments and to vertically or laterally grow in their professional careers, managers have to regularly leave their zones of comfort. New ideas can evolve once our mind is liberated of old stories and when we see things with a broader angle of view. Fear is for instance often a show-stopper in this game. Things which give us a feeling of uncertaintly, doubt and fear are often counteracting our abitions to learn and to grow. Going the extra mile without leaving your own comfort zone, is like sailing your boat into the wrong direction with even more energy. Instead of staying in your own "vicious cycle" of old habits, you could also implement a step by step plan. Try to do everyday something new what you have never done before. Let's try to examine things from a new, unknown perspective for at least 1 hour every day. Later on you can increase to 2, then 3 or more hours, until the new plan becomes the regular one. There's no risk in saying today I'll try a new flavor instead of strawberry ice cream. Being open to new things, even if only limited to 1 hour per day, creates new neural synapses, flexibility increases and new things will follow you as a law of attraction. This gives yourself more room for personal growth.
