The project brings together local communities, governments, and experts 👥🤝 to create a plan that not only prevents floods 🌊❌ but also helps people adapt to and recover from them 💪. The plan focuses on areas most at risk, testing it in nine pilot sites across Greece 🇬🇷, Italy 🇮🇹, Bulgaria 🇧🇬, Malta 🇲🇹, Catalonia 🇪🇸, and the Balearic Islands 🏝️. These sites represent a mix of urban 🏙️, rural 🌳, coastal 🌊, and industrial 🏭 areas, each with its own unique challenges. The project uses a “bottom-up” approach ⬆️, meaning that local communities are at the heart of the solution, leading the charge in finding ways to protect themselves 🛡️. And the vision is big: if these methods work in these areas, they could be used across the entire Mediterranean 🌞, helping to protect communities from the devastating impacts of flash floods for years to come. • Discover our pilot catchments 🌍 The LocAll4Flood project seeks to develop an Integrated Multi-stakeholder Governance Model, applicable for the management of flash floods in the Mediterranean basin Interreg Euro-MED Programme. But in order to succeed, this model needs to be tested in real places. The Gurri catchment area, in Catalonia, is one of them. The Gurri is a river that crosses the Plain of Vic. Through the urban area of this city, it receives the waters of three tributaries, the Mèder, the Torrent de Sant Jaume and the Torrent de l'Esperança. If the upstreams of these rivers pass through rural areas, their downstream coincide with heavily populated or industrial areas 🏭 which present a high flood risk due to their limited hydraulic capacity. Even though flash floods are unusual in Plain of Vic, their economic and human impact can be strong, at it was the case during the Storm Gloria 🌧️ in 2020. BETA Technological Center, the LocAll4flood lead partner, is engaged in collaborative efforts with local and regional stakeholders to address these issues with a holistic approach (prevention, adaptation, mitigation). #FlashFloods #Climate #RiskManagement #Vic #Catalonia

🌍 In the context of climate change, what is expected are longer periods of drought 🌞 and episodes of very intense rainfall 🌧️. This is especially likely to continue happening in the Mediterranean 🌊 and in small watersheds. After the devastating flood that took place in Valencia two weeks ago, we are completely aware of the importance to take actions for prevention, adaptation, and mitigation of flash floods. 📢 In this context, we are coordinating the LocAll4Flood project to assess this phenomenon in the Mediterranean basin. What are flash floods? 🌊 Flash floods occur when heavy rainfall causes water to overflow in a short period of time, submerging normally dry land. Streams with little or no water supply are overloaded in a matter of hours, rapidly flooding nearby areas. How to improve prevention? 🚨 Improve alert systems so the message arrives on time. 🤝 Enhance response systems of different political entities. How to improve adaptation? 📝 Conduct surveys on public perception: raise awareness among people about whether they live in flood-prone areas and the associated risks. 📚 Educate the population on flood risks so they can exercise greater caution during rain episodes. How to improve mitigation? In the past, floods were managed with "grey" infrastructure like dams and river rerouting, which can be effective but are costly 💸 and prone to failure ⚠️. These facilities can also harm natural habitats and sediment flow, impacting agriculture 🌾 and coastline protection 🏝️. 🌱 Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) offer a sustainable alternative to naturally mitigate flood risks. Examples include: 🌿 Restoring wetlands. 🌲 Planting forests. 🌳 Increasing urban permeability: creating more green zones. 🌾 Covering fields with vegetation. This new approach, supported by projects like LocAll4Flood, represents a more sustainable flood management strategy 🌍.

  • LocAll4Flood Interreg Euro-MED Programme project meeting in Malta 🌍 On 12 and 13 November, the LocAll4Flood partnership gathered in Malta to discuss and make progress on several project activities. One of the new features is the creation of a catalogue of Nature-Based Solutions that can be used to mitigate the impact of flash floods. 🌳 An Early Warning System tailored to the 9 catchment pilots in Spain, Italy, Malta, Greece and Bulgaria is currently being tested. 📢 The results of hundreds of surveys on the perception of flood risk in these areas are now compiled and will be analysed. 📈 The increasing unpredictability of the climate makes it essential to adopt a methodology that brings together the various aspects of flood risk management, from regional planning to warning systems. https://lnkd.in/ej7JNxEd Interreg Euro-MED Natural Heritage #FlashFloods #Climatechange #RiskManagement #Prevention
