We ❤ materials and processes. The MAPEX Center for Materials and Processes connects more than 1000 scientific and technical employees on the campus of the University of Bremen. They work in the STEM faculties and non-university research institutes. MAPEX forms the core of the high-profile area "Materials Sciences and Technologies" - one of five high-profile areas at the University of Bremen. ♦️ What are we interested in? The scientists networked at MAPEX research and develop materials and processes. They are particularly interested in sustainable mobility and energy. One focus is on the astronautical exploration of space. In particular, the Humans on Mars Initiative is working on this. ♦️ What do we do? MAPEX networks, supports and promotes researchers in the fields of materials science, materials engineering and materials processing on campus at the University of Bremen. ♦️ How do we do this? The MAPEX core facility provides access to large-scale scientific equipment. They can be viewed online in an instrument database and can also be used by external institutions. The ProMat Master's programme offers specific preparation for a doctorate in the MAPEX context. The MAPEX team organizes workshops for researchers and a qualification programme for doctoral students. The MAPEX communication team helps bringing science to the public. A big thanks to Massimo Delle Piane for an excellent input at the MAPEX workshop on AI tools. Thanks also to the many participants. That the room was completely full to the end speaks for great interest and valuable insights. 🗺️ The workshop provided a practical introduction to using artificial intelligence (AI) tools in academic research, particularly tailored for material science researchers of the MAPEX community. As AI tools, including large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, become increasingly integrated into research workflows, the session explored their potential and risks. 🔧 Participants had the chance to explore a range of tools for research, data analysis, literature review, and writing support. The workshop included hands-on sessions to help participants apply AI effectively and responsibly to their academic challenges. 🙏 Thanks again to Massimo and all the participants for making this workshop such an inspiring event! 👉 More information: https://lnkd.in/e5XuZfym #mapexphd
Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming Falk Wagner, Bremen State Chairman of the SPD, and his colleagues from the SPD Wissenschaftsausschuss, to the members of the #DFG Cluster of Excellence application “The Martian Mindset”. In an interesting exchange, we were able to present our latest research projects made in Bremen: The Martian Mindset is intended to lay the foundations for the highly automated and resilient production of materials and components from scarce resources that are free of fossil fuels. The aim is to not only make a contribution to the exploration of Mars, but also to sustainability on Earth. We would like to thank Falk Wagner for his visit and the stimulating discussions! Our high five today goes to Prof. Dr. Gisela Detrell 🙌 She is Professor for 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗙𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 at the School of Engineering and Design, TU Munich, and we are delighted to welcome her to #ZARM at the Universität Bremen 👉 on Thursday, 13 February 2025, at 14:00 h. In her talk, Prof. Detrell will share her expertise and current research on 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 (𝗟𝗦𝗦) for human missions to the #Moon and #Mars. Unlike the International Space Station, these crewed bases or habitats must meet entirely different challenges and requirements. One promising approach? #Photobioreactors as part of the LSS to cultivate microalgae – potentially producing oxygen and food for the crew. But what are the key challenges in detail? 💡 The impact of radiation on algae 💡 Operation under partial gravity 💡 Selecting the right hardware for cultivation and food processing 💡 System automation and long-term stability We’re excited to explore these questions and to look at some of the answers!
