    Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center recently hosted the H.N. Saurage IV Distinguished Lecture Series, welcoming Dr. Maryellen L. Giger, a global leader in medical imaging and artificial intelligence, as this year’s distinguished speaker. Her presentation, "Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging and the Need for MIDRC," explored the transformative role of AI in enhancing diagnostic precision and patient outcomes. The event also celebrated innovation through a competitive poster session, where Physics & Astronomy LSU graduate students showcased groundbreaking research. Congratulations to Lily Dickson and Corrine Vanya (1st place), Nathan Dobranski (2nd place), and Olivia Magneson (3rd place) for their exceptional projects advancing medical physics and imaging technologies. This annual series, supported by the H.N. Saurage IV Family Fund, fosters collaboration and research that elevate cancer care in Louisiana and beyond. Students from LSU and other universities will be showing off their undergraduate research through presentations and posters, and there will even be a student art show! I will be participating in the panel discussion on “Pursuing Careers in Research”. As an academic medical physicist at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, I know that there is more than one path to a fulfilling research career.     It has been 2 months since our first treatment with the Elekta Unity. We have already treated a lot of patients of various treatment sites. All this was possible due to the efforts of the whole MRgRT team at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. (Dr. Krystal Kirby, Jennifer Voss, Dr. Chris Schneider, Dan Neck, Morgan Wiley and Christina Vidrine).

    Dr. Charles Wood, a radiation oncologist at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, mentored Sarah Schmeeckle for her project "Dental Complications of Radiation Therapy in Head and Neck Cancer." Sarah, the daughter of Mary Bird Perkins medical oncologist Kellie Schmeeckle, qualified for the Louisiana Region VII Science and Engineering Fair after presenting at St. Joseph's Academy science fair. This past weekend, Sarah showcased her project at Louisiana State University. Her mentorship with Dr. Wood highlights Mary Bird Perkins' commitment to fostering the next generation of oncologists. Congratulations, Sarah, and thank you, Dr. Wood! 🎉
