Hybrid design at its finest: the Court Theatre is shaping a new era in construction. 🏗️ 🌲 🛠️ The new Court Theatre (Performing Arts Precinct) in Christchurch is making great strides towards its 2025 opening. Featuring LVL Portal Frames, bespoke timber trusses, a structural steel frame with concrete shear walls, and a combination of concrete and CLT upper floors, it’s set to become one of Christchurch's landmark buildings. This collaboration between Athfield Architects Ltd and Haworth Tompkins highlights innovative design, with Hawkins leading the delivery and Christchurch City Council for making this happen. During the site tour it was amazing to see how much is going on here, it will have 2 auditoriums, one larger and a small comprising of a total of 377 seats, a wardrobe, costume and education studio, as well as a full front house bar and café, and we can't forget the the fan-favorite pizza parlor making a return. I feel like this is exactly what Christchurch needs — unique designs that combine different materials, moving beyond traditional construction. This new Court Theatre stands as a symbol of the city's innovative and sustainable future. The progress so far is incredible, and it's exciting to see innovative materials like mass timber play such a pivotal role. Huge thanks to Felix Becker for leading the site tour, New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors for organising the tour, Red Stag TimberLab for supplying the timber, and KOBE CONSTRUCTION for their exceptional installation work. #Christchurch #MassTimber #CLT #Hybrid #Sustainability #Theatre
