Congratulations to our new cohort of Early-Career Research Fellows in the Environmental Protection and Stewardship and the Education Research tracks! During their fellowship, the eight fellows on the Environmental Protection and Stewardship track will study climate change, sea-level rise, and water quality impacts on Gulf of Mexico ecosystems. The five fellows on the Education Research track will explore science and environmental education in the Gulf or Alaska, focusing on sense-of-place in learning environments. Young community planners in the making! I was privileged to represent FHWA at the Transportation Professional Day in Baton Rouge, an event to showcase transportation professions for K-12 students and their families. The lead sponsor was the NASEM Gulf Research Program. Louisiana Transportation Research Center and WTS Greater Baton Rouge Chapter organized the event, inviting local transportation-related institutions, agencies, and firms to provide interactive activities. Exhibitors provided some cool demonstrations and exercises that excited the kids. To help the kids think about the transportation and land use connection, the Louisiana Division office of the Federal Highway Administration created a "Build Your Town" activity with road and sidewalk segments; residential, retail, and institutional buildings; and cars and people which could be arranged and rearranged. Several children considered how best to facilitate car and pedestrian travel to the town's destinations. And many talked about drivers watching for pedestrians, and pedestrians needing sidewalks to get from their homes to the school and grocery store.

Check out this write up about our latest #ClimateConversation on Housing and Disaster. 👇
I learned so much from last month's Climate Conversation on Housing and Disasters. This conversation really drove home for me that the climate crisis is a housing crisis. I had the chance to highlight some of the key takeaways in a short article, which features excellent quotes and insights from Tracy Kijewski-Correa and Carlos Martín. Learn more about some opportunities to strengthen the resilience of houses and the communities that call them home! #Climate #HousingResilience #NaturalDisasters

This year, the Gulf of Mexico had its first lease sale for offshore wind. Understanding how wind energy development may impact ecology will be an important component to the successful integration of wind energy to the Gulf's offshore energy resources.
In July, we held a workshop to design a field monitoring program for offshore wind development in the Nantucket Shoals region. The goal? To advance understanding of how wind energy development may impact Nantucket Shoals ecology. Read the Proceedings: https://ow.ly/VT6O50UjiWS #OffshoreWindEnergy #WindEnergy #Ecology
