The Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in East Tennessee delivers scientific discoveries and technical breakthroughs that are integral to the development of clean energy, national security and provide economic benefit to the nation. Our wide-ranging portfolio includes materials science, chemistry, geoscience, nanoscience, and nuclear and particle physics. PSD-led research plays a key role across Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL’s) major cross-laboratory initiatives, with activities that encourage translational research relying on interdisciplinary teams.

A new Physical Sciences at ORNL technology using deep eutectic solvents for carbon dioxide #separation offers a cost-effective, energy-efficient solution. Unlike traditional amine-based methods, which require high energy and have issues with solvent loss, this approach leverages non-toxic, low-cost DES solvents in a #membrane contactor system, making it both sustainable and scalable. Congratulations, American Chemical Society International Heroes of Chemistry! A team from Savannah River Mission Completion, Savannah River National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) was lauded for developing and deploying a first-of-a-kind separations #chemistry that is remediating millions of gallons of radioactive waste at the Savannah River Site. Two embodied innovations are a sorbent for strontium and actinides (SRNL lead researcher Dave Hobbs is shown shaking hands) and solvent extraction for cesium removal (ORNL lead researcher Bruce Moyer follows Hobbs).
