THIS IS A PERSONAL ACCOUNT Assistant District Attorney General - Trial attorney handling criminal cases. Opinions my own.

Law students, When you start your first job - If it is one where you bill by the hours: 1. Make sure you spend time learning how to keep your time. It's easy once you make something that you do immediately after finishing whatever you are doing that gets billed. 2. Bill for everything that you do. Let your supervisor cut your time. 3. Keep a hard copy of your time. If you don't, you will get called out for not billing enough, even though you did. Partners tend to forget they cut your time. So, keep a hard copy. Ask for assignments: 1. Ask, ask, ask. You'd think firms would be good at handing out work, but they aren't. 2. Make your space. It's up to you. Even if your firm has outstanding training, you will have to fight to get your skills. So, let people know you want to work with them. Make yourself invaluable on cases. Mind shift: 1. Now that you are hired, shift your thinking. Everyone you work with who is an attorney who isn't in your hiring group has more experience than you. Now that you are hired, people do not care about your grades, law school, and extracurricular activities. 2. It will take time to learn the area of practice and the trade that is law. It takes time. You won't learn it all in a day. What advice do you have for lawyers starting out? #lawstudents
