America250 Chair, the United States Commission to plan our nation’s 250th anniversary. 43rd Treasurer of the U.S.

About us

Rosie Rios was designated as the chair for the United States Semiquincentennial Commission in July 2022, following her prior appointment by Congress as one of the Commission’s 16 private citizens. From 2009 to 2016, Rios served as the 43rd Treasurer of the United States and just completed her term as a Visiting Scholar at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. She is most recently known for initiating and leading the efforts to place a portrait of a woman on the front of U.S. currency for the first time in over a century. Upon her resignation in 2016, she received the Hamilton Award, the highest honor bestowed in the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Rosie was the longest serving Senate-confirmed Treasury official beginning with her time on the Treasury/Federal Reserve Transition Team in November 2008 at the height of the financial crisis. Rios is a graduate of Harvard University and was selected as the first Latina in Harvard’s 384-year history to have a portrait commissioned in her honor. She currently serves on the board of American Family Insurance, Fidelity Charitable Trust, the Schlesinger Council at Harvard, the Advisory Committee for Artemis Real Estate Partners and was previously a Trustee with the Alameda County Employees Retirement Association (ACERA). Her personal passion includes EMPOWERMENT 2020, an initiative that facilitates the physical recognition of historical American women and recently launched Notable Women, a project with some folks at Google’s Creative Lab that uses Augmented Reality to teach kids about historic American women. She remains active in real estate finance and is consulting on several transformational projects in the Bay Area under her “RESCUE” initiative: Real Estate for Socially Conscious Urban Empowerment

  • Last month, I was honored to speak with President General Pamela Wright, A250 Commissioner Lynn Forney Young, and Northern Californian members of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Partners like Daughters of the American Revolution will help ensure our 250th birthday is the largest and most inspiring celebration in our nation’s history. I'm looking forward to continuing to work with DAR to bring all Americans together to reflect on our nation's journey and story. Thank you for having me!

This Black History Month, we celebrate the contributions of Americans like Benjamin Banneker. An extraordinary self-taught mathematician, astronomer, and surveyor whose brilliance defied the odds, Banneker published almanacs, predicted solar eclipses, and assisted in designing Washington, D.C. 🏛️ Learn more about his story by visiting his statue at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture!

  • We’re thrilled to see the White House establish Task Force 250 to celebrate America’s 250th Birthday. We look forward to working collaboratively with President Trump, Vice President Vance, the White House, federal agencies, and our partners across the country to ensure that this milestone is the largest and most inspiring celebration and commemoration in our nation’s history! 🇺🇸

  • Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of helping launch the DC250 Commission. Washington D.C. is the heart of our democracy and the DC250 Commission will have a key role in planning of America’s 250th birthday celebrations in the nation’s capital. Thank you to DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, Phil Mendelson, Chancellor Lewis Ferebee, O’Kiyyah Lyons-Lucas, and Powell Elementary School for joining the effort! #America250 #Semiquincentennial

  • Today, we observe International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a solemn occasion to pause and honor the memory of all those who suffered during one of history’s darkest chapters. This day reminds me of our shared responsibility to ensure that the horrors of the past are never forgotten. Take a moment today to learn, reflect, and commit to building a world free from prejudice and oppression.

Today, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, we take time to honor the memory of the millions who lost their lives at the hands of bigotry and hatred. This day compels us to reflect on the devastating consequences of intolerance and indifference—and to recommit ourselves to the principles of justice, equality, and human dignity.

  • This week, America250 was honored to visit Princeton, New Jersey. The Garden State was the site of more battles during the Revolutionary War than any of the 13 original colonies, and I was so grateful for the opportunity to witness the state known as “The Crossroads of the Revolution" myself. It was also great seeing NJ awardees of America’s Field Trip, and hearing their stories from their visit to Yellowstone National Park! Thank you to Governor Phil Murphy for his leadership, as well as NJ First Lady Tammy Murphy, Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, Lt. Governor Tahesha Way, and RevolutionNJ for making this such a special event. As we approach America's 250th birthday, I look forward to continuing to highlight how every state is bringing the celebrations of our American story home. #Semiquincentennial #America250

2024 is wrapping up, but America250 is just getting started. 🌟 As we get another year closer to America’s Semiquincentennial in 2026, we’re looking forward to bringing together our congressional caucus, mayor task force with United States Conference of Mayors, national resource partners, and the American people on our journey to #America250.

  • This week, I had the opportunity to discuss the importance of honoring America’s Hispanic community in our American story at the Hispanic Leadership Summit. Our nation’s 250th celebrations will give us the opportunity to honor our Hispanic leaders, past and present, while commemorating and celebrating our community in the years to come. I hope to instill the same sense of belonging and belief in the American Dream I feel every day as the daughter of Mexican immigrants. Thank you to Claudia Romo Edelman and We Are All Human Foundation for the invite! I look forward to continuing to tell the stories of Hispanic contributions to this country.
