Accelerating leader development through bold ideas, transformative experiences, and inclusive communities
About us
At the Sanger Leadership Center, we believe that leadership is a skill, like reading or math, that everyone can learn. We seek to democratize the leadership development process by providing students, alumni, and external affiliates with the bold ideas, transformative experiences, and inclusive communities needed to self-guide and accelerate leadership development. Empowering students across diverse backgrounds to develop the character and skills needed to become principled, inclusive leaders is more now more important than ever in today’s unpredictable world. Located at the University of Michigan’s Stephen M. Ross School of Business, our center serves as an important bridge between aspiring and current thought leaders in both research and practice. The cornerstone of our teachings is the Michigan Model of Leadership, a model based on 50 years of research generated at the University of Michigan (U-M). Our award-winning, multidisciplinary board of faculty champions regularly contribute new ideas to the scholarly study of leader development. Our connected student and alumni communities regularly engage with one another at Sanger events and communities to help each other continue to develop as leaders at U-M and beyond. We aim to have a deep impact on the world by graduating students who will lead with their values at the forefront and with a mindset that they can always learn new skills and grow on their leadership journey.

It's Michigan Model of Leadership (MMoL) Monday! 💡 Developed at the University of Michigan, this powerful tool accelerates your leadership development by allowing you to identify strengths and growth opportunities. Leverage this knowledge to lead a team, drive change, or enhance your personal growth. 💪 Brysan Porterfield, MBA ’25, uses the model to spark curiosity within her teams. 👥 “Building yourself into an effective leader can be a complex feat, but the MMoL has enabled me to grow and impact myself and others. The 'Innovate' quadrant has been especially impactful, teaching me that by staying curious and adaptable, I can deepen my relationships with teammates, strengthen my overall knowledge, and drive positive results and change." – Brysan Porterfield, MBA ’25 Learn more about the model and how you can use it: https://lnkd.in/da_mcbF

This year, we're celebrating 10 years of the Ross Leaders Academy at the Sanger Leadership Center! It was great kicking off the cohort this year and teaching sessions related to identity and values. During the values session earlier this month, one of our students commented, "I think I found my values during the past 30 minutes!" The students brought their top seven values to the session after doing a sorting exercise at home. Then, they partnered up and were asked to describe a peak life experience while their partner observed keywords and possible values. When students heard their values mirrored back to them by a partner, it either affirmed their independent work or opened up new realms of inquiry. Nicholas Viviano and I led a discussion afterward. #Values are so foundational in leadership work. How are you helping your students or clients discover theirs?

I'm still buzzing from the fascinating Story Lab Retreat! Surrounding myself with fellow storytellers reminded me of the transformative power of sharing tales. Listening to others' stories was truly mesmerizing - each one a thread weaving our connections, healing our hearts, and uplifting our spirits. I'm grateful for the reminder that storytelling is indeed magic. Here's to crafting captivating tales that inspire, and unite us! May my stories be infused with the same wonder and awe I experienced at the retreat. #storytelling Sanger Leadership Center University of Michigan - Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy
