For the past 26 years, Doug Arlt, Senior Engineering Manager at SEL, has enjoyed taking on a variety of challenges related to engineering, product development, and leading teams. Now, as he prepares to retire at the end of December, he’s looking forward to a ‘choose your own adventure’ approach to daily life. Doug began his career at SEL in 1998 as a firmware engineer in Research & Development. After graduating with a degree in electrical engineering from Walla Walla University in 1992, he and his wife moved to California. There, he secured his first engineering job while his wife completed her master’s degree in physical therapy. The publicly held company he worked for was sold, and although he disliked its focus on short-term earnings, he enjoyed working with customers, some of whom he freelanced for after moving to Colton, WA, in 1995. After the birth of their first child, he decided that it was time to look for a more stable job with benefits. This led him to apply for a position at SEL. Over the years, Doug seized many opportunities to take on new roles and projects at SEL. One highlight he recalls was leading the team that developed the SEL Real-Time Automation Controller. At the time, it was the largest product development project that the company had taken on. The product has long been a top seller for SEL. Doug attributes his tenure at SEL to the constant challenges that kept him learning and growing. “I’ve gotten great satisfaction in leading teams to tackle difficult challenges,” he says. “I enjoy being part of a dedicated team focused on solving tough problems and achieving shared goals.” The stability, culture, and opportunity to live close to family in a “wonderful community” were also key factors. He particularly appreciated the strong focus on customer service at SEL, in contrast to his first corporate experience. Beyond work, Doug has been active in the community, including volunteering for Palouse Habitat for Humanity since 2008 and serving as its board chair for seven years. He believes that community volunteer work unites people. "We always hear about how divided we are as a country, but when you work together in the community, you don’t feel that division. When you’re building a house for someone, nobody cares about your political affiliation. You just enjoy working together on something meaningful.” In retirement, Doug looks forward to the freedom to choose his daily activities, whether spending time with family, volunteering, helping his son on the family farm, or playing with his new grandson. Congratulations, Doug! Thank you for your years of dedication to SEL. Pictured: Doug and his wife Paulette in Hawaii.

Thanks to this group from Orofino Junior-Senior High School for visiting our Lewiston facility! The students enjoyed a tour of the manufacturing floor and tackled a hands-on activity focused on chemical engineering. "Our students were able to make many associations from the curriculum being taught and understand the real-life application that is sculpted on a chemistry foundation," shared Ms. Melton, the OJSHS Science Teacher. "I look forward to continuing to expose my students to the SEL experience."

SEL received the 2024 Dave Kelleher Leadership Award from the Employers' Forum of Indiana (EFI) in Indianapolis this week! The award honors those dedicated to improving healthcare price transparency. SEL was recognized for its use of claims data to avoid hidden fees, identify large price discrepancies, manage prescription drugs, contract directly, and improve healthcare price transparency for employees and their families. “We've been so impressed with all that SEL is doing to support market and policy initiatives toward aligning payment with the value of services provided,” said EFI President Gloria Sachdev. “Their commitment to improving the value of healthcare price transparency and value-based care is truly commendable.” SEL employee owners Pamela Colley and Chris Foutch were present to accept the award on behalf of SEL. Kori Whitcomb, pictured seventh from the left, is wrapping up her 22-year SEL career this winter as she enters retirement. In 2002, Kori joined the company to help its budding aviation department. With a degree in air transportation business, and over a dozen years of travel coordination experience, Kori quickly became a key member of the team. While helping colleagues get safely and efficiently to their destinations around the world, Kori also modernized the company’s scheduling system, hired a team of aviation schedulers, collaborated with SEL pilots, upheld federal and state travel regulations, and assisted with aircraft selection when SEL expanded its fleet. “Coming to SEL was definitely the best move I ever made,” Kori reflected. “The opportunities SEL has given me are beyond anything I expected or dreamed.” And Kori has been dreaming about travel for a while. “Growing up, I really didn’t travel, but always had a fascination with it,” she said. “When I was in high school, my mom suggested I take that interest and turn it into a career. That stuck. I’ve loved pursuing and working in this field ever since.” Another highlight for Kori has been the people she’s worked with. “They are incredible,” Kori shared. “I’m really proud of how the aviation team has grown and all we’ve accomplished together. I’m so grateful to everyone for making it so easy to come to work every day.” What’s next for Kori as work falls off the daily schedule? She’s looking forward to spending more time with her family, volunteering in her community, and of course—traveling. “I definitely want to go to Europe, and I have friends in the U.S. I’m excited to visit, too.” Wherever retirement takes you Kori, we wish you all the best. Thank you for helping SEL business aviation take flight and for supporting passengers and flight teams for over 20 years!
