This week, Stimson Environmental Security and the Institute for Economics & Peace hosted a discussion on the launch of IEP's 2024 Ecological Threat Report. The discussion focused on how we can better understand how rising food insecurity, water stress, natural disasters, and demographic pressures threaten stability. We were joined by an esteemed group of panelists and speakers David Bonnardeaux, Michael Collins, Jade Cooper, Tracy Hart, Andrew Hyde, and Cassandra Schneider, moderated by Natalie Fiertz, for a discussion on how states can develop policies to address these multidimensional threats. 🐟 On October 9th, Stimson Environmental Security Director Sally Yozell spoke on a panel of experts at #TSSS2024 about the need to build adaptable seafood traceability programs to counter-IUU fishing and address human and labor rights violations in the seafood supply chain. Yozell reflected on the lessons learned during a series of workshops co-hosted with FishWise to assist NOAA Fisheries in reimagining the Seafood Import Monitoring Program. Thank you to Minako Iue for moderating, and to Seafood Legacy for hosting! For more information on our workshops, click this link: https://lnkd.in/e9zU26KH

🌊 Stimson Environmental Security's new #CORVI rapid assessment reveals threats to coastal ecosystems, communities, and economies in the Indian Ocean island nation of Mauritius. 💡 Key Takeaways: - Sea-level rise, loss of coastal ecosystems, flooding, and tropical cyclones compound to increase the extent and impact of coastal and pluvial flooding - Reliance on beachfront tourism, stressed freshwater resources, and high population density pose long-term vulnerabilities to the island's economy and communities 💡 Key recommendations: - Protect existing mangroves and engage local communities in the restoration process - Collaborate with the tourism sector around innovative insurance products, business continuity planning, and eco-tourism - Work with the fisheries sector to strengthen the effectiveness and responsiveness of government regulation to changing climate conditions Congratulations to the research team Natalie Fiertz, Tracy Rouleau, Sally Yozell, Noah Fritzhand, Heidi Prislan, Jeff A. Ardron, Subaskar Sitsabeshan, Hilary Enos-Edu, Jonathan McCue, and Emilie Wiehe! Many thanks to our partners on this project The Commonwealth #BlueCharter! And thank you to Environment and Climate Change Canada and the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance for their generous financial support that made this project possible, and the many workshop and survey participants in Mauritius for their engagement! 🌍 Our CORVI assessment of climate risk and vulnerability in Toamasina, Madagascar is one of many US actions to address sea level rise around the globe announced at #ClimateWeek! 🌊 Sea level rise is the 2nd-highest identified risk in Madagascar's second-largest city and principal port, threatening the infrastructure that connects it to the rest of the country. Thanks to U.S. Department of State, Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance, and Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco for their support on this project. https://lnkd.in/eA6pa2G5
