After 40 years, scientists have finally identified a specific disinfection byproduct formed when chloramine is used to treat drinking water🚰 This newly identified chemical— the chloronitramide anion— was found in all 40 drinking water samples tested in the study. Is #Smartwater really as "smart" as it claims? 🤔 We put this vapor-distilled premium water to the test, and here’s what we found! ⁠ ⁠ 🧪 Clean Results: Our test revealed no traces of inorganic contaminants, disinfection byproducts, or VOCs—another perk of the vapor distillation process.⁠ ⁠ 🔬 Heavy Metals: Common concerning metals like lead and arsenic were not detected. How’s the water quality in the Windy City? 🌬️🏙️ We collected data from customer taps and the water utility— here’s what we found:⁠ ⁠ 💎 Hard Water: With an average hardness of 133.17 ppm, Chicago water is considered hard due to elevated levels of calcium and magnesium.⁠ ⁠ ⚗️ Disinfection Byproducts (DBPs): Several DBPs, including trichloroacetic acid (a haloacetic acid) and trihalomethanes like chloroform and bromodichloromethane, were found above Tap Score’s health guidelines but remain below US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) limits. The good news? Home filtration systems can help reduce these contaminants! ⁠ ⁠ 🔩 Lead: Detected at the utility at 0.0031 ppm (below the action level), but not at customer taps. The EPA states that no level of lead is safe, so corrosion control is key.⁠ ⁠ 🧪 PFAS: Two compounds—perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid—were detected at low levels, below EPA limits but above Tap Score guidelines.
