Tdh is excited to announce the launch of our new host community field office and child friendly space in Kalobeyei, made possible through funding from the U.S. Department of State: Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration and UNICEF in Kenya. This new initiative will strengthen our presence in the host community, ensuring greater integration and enhancing our programmes to combat issues affecting children like child marriage, child labour, teenage pregnancies, and neglect. The event was graced by key stakeholders, including the Kakuma Member of County Assembly, UNICEF representatives, the Directorate of Children Services, Humanity & Inclusion, Kakuma Municipality Administrator, Community Leaders, and, of course, the children who inspire our work every day. I recently represented World Vision Germany at Engagement Global gGmbH's EU Technical Advisory Department’s 25th anniversary, in appreciation of the services and support received from this entity over the past decades. This entails dissemination of relevant EU-related information and updates, targeted technical support during project proposal, contract development and implementation phases, as well as provision of EU-related trainings which numerous people (including myself) have benefited from. Congratulations on the anniversary and many thanks! 🙂 Flashback to a past European Commission Directorate-General for International Partnerships (INTPA)-funded project: "Joining Forces for Africa (JOFA) - Protecting children during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond". Formed in 2017, Joining Forces is an alliance of the six largest international NGOs working with and for children to secure their rights and end violence against children – ChildFund Alliance; Plan International; Save the Children International; SOS Children's Villages International; Terre des Hommes International Federation; and World Vision. The Jofa project strengthened local and national child protection systems while working with families, communities and institutions to raise awareness and capacity to protect children. Child participation was core to the project, with child led initiatives and campaigns having been promoted. While in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya (one of five project countries), it was insightful and inspiring alike to: ▪️ listen in to reflections, plans and commitments of various stakeholders related to the local child protection situation, including how to effectively prevent and manage cases of child violations ▪️ engage with trained adult and adolescent positive parenting facilitators, on their efforts, challenges and successes in encouraging parents and caregivers to foster safe and nurturing environments for their children, including use of non-violent disciplinary methods ▪️ meet children representatives of established child protection school clubs, who confidently articulated and demonstrated their increased awareness of children's rights and how to safeguard them! 2024 has been a year of progress at Tdh in Kenya, and we are proud of the strides we have made in protecting and empowering children across the country. Through our work in child protection, access to justice, healthcare, water, sanitation & hygiene and emergency response, our teams in Dadaab, Garissa, Kakuma and Korogocho have been committed to ensuring every child has the right to a safe and joyful childhood. We remain committed to our mission in 2025 and beyond, advocating, supporting, and standing for the rights of every child to ensure they can grow, learn, and thrive. As the year 2024 comes to a close, I wish to reminisce about the successful engagements I have been involved in in the world of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support. Working with clients especially children from protracted regions across Africa has shaped my perspective on matters diversity and different approaches to support resilience building. Training of staff on safeguarding, basic counselling and PFA has been a necessity in programming and an essential safeguarding (empowerment) component. Facilitating such trainings as well as Psychoeducation sessions for both caregivers and children has been a fulfilling endeavour throughout the year which has not only provided the necessary support to the individuals I serve but also sharpened my facilitating skills in the MHPSS programming. I am grateful for the year that has been and look forward to an even brighter year.
