About us

The Nature Conservancy is a global environmental nonprofit working to create a world where people and nature can thrive. We're proud of what we've accomplished since our founding in 1951: The Nature Conservancy has protected more than 117 million acres of land and 5,000 miles of rivers worldwide — and we operate more than 100 marine conservation projects globally. We have more than 1 million members and work in 81 countries and territories, using a collaborative approach that engages local communities, governments, the private sector, and other partners. Guided by science, we create innovative, on-the-ground solutions to our world's toughest challenges so that nature and people can thrive together. We are tackling climate change, conserving lands, waters and oceans at an unprecedented scale, providing food and water sustainably and helping make cities more sustainable. The Nature Conservancy has been in Asia Pacific for almost 30 years with projects in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Mongolia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands. The Nature Conservancy’s vision for Hong Kong is to be a resilient and livable city where we harness the power of nature to combat urban challenges, create economic opportunities and improve wellbeing. Strategies and Actions - RESTORING coastal wetlands, including oyster reefs, to enhance biodiversity, improve water quality and make our city’s coastlines more resilient to climate change. - INVESTIGATING how nature-based solutions can be used to benefit Hong Kong by capturing carbon and protecting the city’s shoreline from extreme weather events. - ENGAGING traditional aquaculture communities through capacity building to make their industry more sustainable. - CULTIVATING a new generation of conservation leaders and an environmentally conscious community. In 2019, The Nature Conservancy was awarded the Lui Che Woo Prize for Sustainable Development. • [𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗛!] Building on the success of "ART FOR THE EARTH: An Exhibition and Auction for Conservation" in September 2024, TNC is thrilled to share another successful event held from December 4-12, 2024, at MTR Corporation Limited 香港鐵路有限公司 Hong Kong Station and Tai Koo Station. The ART FOR THE EARTH initiative continues to leverage art as a powerful medium to promote the protection of endangered species and their habitats. The exhibition featured fourteen unique, handcrafted doll art pieces by the talented Ning Lau, each representing a threatened species or habitat. Made from upcycled fabrics, these creations emphasized sustainability and the importance of reusing materials. In additional to the exhibition booths at both MTR stations, visitors enjoyed an immersive experience with our interactive #augmentedreality (AR) game, connecting the two exhibitions and allowing virtual exploration of endangered species and their habitats. Another AR game was launched across all MTR stations on the urban lines, enabling passengers to interact with digital panels, scan QR codes, and engage with conservation stories. This expansion ensures that the conservation message reaches a broader audience, making it an accessible and engaging part of commuters’ daily journeys. We extend our heartfelt gratitude again to Ning Lau for her sustainable creations, MTR Advertising managed by JCDecaux Transport Hong Kong, and all other supporting parties. Your invaluable support made this exhibition possible. Thank you to everyone who visited and joined us in celebrating and protecting our planet’s precious biodiversity. • 2025 Nature-Based Solutions for Climate Conference, organized by The Nature Conservancy in Hong Kong and Civic Exchange 思匯政策研究所, featured an esteemed lineup of speakers, including 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 Debra Roberts (Co-Chair, AR6 Working Group II, IPCC), 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗶 (Members of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, member of the Environment and Resources Committee, Vice Chair of the National Expert Committee on Climate Change), 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 Kam Sing Wong (Former Secretary for the Environment (2012-2022), Hong Kong SAR Government), 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 Christine Loh (Chief Development Strategist, Institute for the Environment, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Former Under Secretary for the Environment), 𝗠𝗿 林超英Lam Chiu Ying (Former Head of Observatory and Senior Advisor of Hong Kong 2050 is Now), and 𝗠𝘀 Pecvin Yong (Deputy Director, Northern Metropolis Co-ordination Office). They offered valuable insights on climate change, sustainability, and environmental policy. Professor Debra Roberts emphasized the urgency of cohesive climate adaptation strategies, noting that global temperatures have increased faster since 1970 than in any other 50-year period over at least the last 2000 years. She warned that fragmented and incremental efforts are insufficient in addressing the scale of the crisis. Professor Wong Kam Sing highlighted Hong Kong's unique challenges in implementing effective climate policies, including political, social, and infrastructure aspects, and called for accelerated and coordinated actions. Mr Lam Chiu Ying presented a stark warning about Hong Kong's future, cautioning that heat waves and unprecedented storm surges could become unbearable by the late 21st century, particularly in the northwest regions where the Northern Metropolis is under development. His remarks underscored the critical need to integrate NbS into urban planning to enhance climate resilience. Ms Pecvin Yong emphasized the need to ensure that development goes hand-in-hand with conservation, stating plans for the Northern Metropolis to preserve nature and build sustainable communities.
