Peter Theofilis stalked the sidelines of a touch-football game Thursday and watched a new generation of family and community embrace a Thanksgiving tradition. The instinct for 12 Pittsburgh-area cousins to stage the first “turkey bowl” game sprouted out of services at a Greek Orthodox church in Oakmont. On Thursday, the game celebrated its 50th anniversary. People from Oakmont and Moon — as well as those who came from homes as far as Maryland and Georgia — braved gray skies and occasional rain to take part. https://lnkd.in/g4Z7BmaD

Runners and walkers lined downtown Greensburg’s Main Street Thursday morning for the city’s 33rd annual Turkey Trot. The 5K run and walk typically sees 2,000 participants and Carol Palcic, who has been race director for 29 years, said about 1,800 came out on the cold and rainy morning. Race proceeds support several community nonprofits. “The diehards came out,” race director Palcic said. Some participants donned turkey hats, pilgrim costumes and patriotic attire. Others ran with their four-legged companions. Patrick Burgos, 18, a student at Elizabeth Forward High School, and Emerson Skatell, 18, of Greensburg, were the first place male and female finishers of the race. Burgos crossed the finish line in 16:03 and Skatell finished in 19:47. TribLive photos by Quincey Reese

Pat Narduzzi may not like to admit it, but his #Pitt teams previously have dealt with slumps. Actually, it was only 12 months ago. Pitt was 2-8 as it approached 2023 senior day at Acrisure Stadium, but the Panthers found a way to defeat Boston College, 24-16. This season, Pitt has a much better record (7-4, 3-4 ACC), but just like last year, it will take a four-game losing streak into its game Saturday against Boston College, this time in Chestnut Hill, Mass. https://lnkd.in/gftjBq3F

Officials at the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency, which runs the grant program, say the problems can be traced back to the troubled rollout of a new federal application form for financial aid. PHEAA uses data from the federal form to administer the state grant program, which offers eligible Pennsylvania residents up to $5,750 per year. More than 100,000 students will receive grant funds in the 2024-25 academic year, the agency estimates. https://lnkd.in/gTqcZsKQ
