Industrial treasure and potential toxicity（Mo） Molybdenum (Mo) is a silvery-white metal with a black-gray powder. Although it looks ordinary, it has shown its unique importance in many fields. However, its wide application is accompanied by potential toxicity problems, which requires us to be extra careful when using and handling molybdenum. The main source of molybdenum is molybdenite. This precious metal plays a key role in the manufacture of wear-resistant, heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant alloys, especially in missile and aviation industries. In addition, metallic molybdenum also occupies a place in the electronics industry, and molybdenum compounds are widely used in catalysts, pigments, fertilizers, and electroplating base materials. In the field of biology, molybdenum has been confirmed to be one of the essential trace elements for the human body. It is mainly distributed in red blood cells, liver, kidneys, bones and endocrine glands in the human body, and is mainly excreted rapidly through urine. The blood molybdenum concentration in the human body is maintained in the range of 0.10-0.63μmol/L. Molybdenum is a component of some important enzymes such as xanthine oxidase and aldehyde oxidase, and it plays a key role in decomposition and metabolism in organisms. In addition, molybdenum and copper are biologically antagonistic. Copper can resist the toxicity of molybdenum, while molybdenum can hinder the absorption of copper. However, despite the importance of molybdenum and its compounds in industrial production, we cannot ignore their potential toxicity. Among molybdenum compounds, molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) is more toxic, followed by soluble molybdenum compounds, while insoluble molybdenum compounds are relatively less toxic. Molybdenum poisoning may cause anemia, and molybdenum trioxide is irritating to the eyes, mouth and respiratory mucosa. Therefore, in the process of producing and using molybdenum, we must take strict protective measures to ensure the safety of workers and the environment. Therefore, there are clear limits on the concentration of molybdenum compounds in workshop air. The maximum allowable concentration of insoluble molybdenum compounds is 6mg/m³, while the maximum allowable concentration of soluble molybdenum compounds is 4mg/m³. These regulations are formulated to protect the health of workers and prevent them from being poisoned by long-term exposure to high concentrations of molybdenum compounds. Manufacturers need to regularly monitor the concentration of molybdenum compounds in workshop air to ensure the safety of the working environment.
