Meet Courtney Heid, a Nurse Innovator and creator of the PICC Line Cover! Courtney, a Staff Nurse at University of Iowa Health Care, presented her idea, the PICC Line Cover, at the Iowa Nurse Innovators Pitch Competition in November. Currently, patients with PICC lines use long, bulky sleeves during showers, which often require staff assistance to apply and still may let water in. Courtney’s PICC Line Cover is designed to be less bulky and more effective at keeping dressings clean and dry. We’re proud to support Courtney as she refines her idea through the Iowa Nurse Innovators program. Stay tuned to see how her solution improves patient care!

Meet Lily Hintz, a Nurse Innovator and Founder of Hintz Biomedical. Lily, a Certified Nursing Assistant at Oaknoll, presented her idea, Hintz Biomedical, at the Iowa Nurse Innovators Pitch Competition in November. Her idea addresses a pressing challenge in dementia care — preventing agitation and aggression before they escalate. Hintz Biomedical aims to predict behavioral outbursts by monitoring vital signs like heart rate and skin conductance. This proactive approach empowers caregivers to intervene earlier, reducing stress for both patients and staff. We're thrilled to support Lily as she advances her idea through the Iowa Nurse Innovators and MakerHealth program. Stay tuned for more updates on her journey!

The Rescue Restraint aims to enhance safety for both staff and patients during the restraint of combative individuals. Meet Kayla Piplani BSN, RN, CCRN (Peds), DNP-Student, our third-place finisher of the Iowa Nurse Innovators Pitch Competition! Kayla won $10,000 to advance her idea, StomaCoach. StomaCoach aims to use CT/MRI scans to 3D print the abdomens of patients with ostomies, enabling nurses and caregivers to practice pouching and address issues without repeatedly applying bags to fragile skin. Meet Jill Droste, one of the first-place winners of the Iowa Nurse Innovators Pitch Competition! Jill won $20,000 to advance her idea, the Droste Drape. The Droste Drape addresses the lack of protection for operating room (OR) bed bases from fluids and foreign matter. The wrap-around cover for OR bed bases features an absorbent layer for fluid management and a design that eliminates trip hazards while streamlining cleanup to save time during turnover. Congratulations, Jill, on this achievement!

Meet Janel Williams, one of our first-place winners of the Iowa Nurse Innovators Pitch Competition! Janel won $20,000 to advance her idea, the Double Under Buttocks Drape. The Double Under Buttocks Drape aims to allow for early intervention to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality related to hemorrhage. The drape will be used during delivery and early postpartum to improve the precision of blood loss measurement during delivery. Congratulations, Janel, on this achievement!
