About us
This page is dedicated to small hydropower activities & projects of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). Small hydropower (SHP) is an integral part of a broader UNIDO strategy towards sustainable industrial development and the transition to a clean energy future. UNIDO is a strong advocate of small hydropower since this renewable energy technology provides access to clean and cost-efficient energy, and helps reduce CO2 emissions, achieve greater energy independence and improve the living standards of local communities. SHP contributes to mitigating climate change and reducing poverty.

🌟 Building Capacity for Burundi’s Energy Future 🌟 We are proud to share the successful completion of the Capacity Building Training on Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Feed-in Tariff Setting & Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), held November 5-7, 2024, in Bujumbura, Burundi. This impactful initiative was jointly organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Direction Générale de l’Energie (DGE), Burundi, under the framework of the Promotion of Small Hydro Power (SHP) for productive use and energy services in Burundi project (https://lnkd.in/gkBaUxD8). Training in Numbers: 👥 Participants: 36 professionals, including 11 women, from government, public institutions, and private sector organizations. Attendees were equipped with tools to develop, negotiate, and manage energy projects effectively. Key Training Objectives: 1️⃣ Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs): Understanding essential legal, commercial, and environmental aspects of PPAs Mitigating risks and managing stakeholder relationships Mastering negotiation and implementation strategies 2️⃣ Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs): Grasping the concept and development role of PPPs Evaluating policies, legal frameworks, and model contracts Guiding participants on preparation and implementation The training provided a blend of global insights, Sub-Saharan best practices, and specific contextual lessons for Burundi. 📢 Trainer: Dominique Savio Barahira, an experienced energy consultant from Rwanda, delivered high-quality sessions tailored to regional needs. Why This Training Matters: By enhancing the capacity of government officials and energy stakeholders, this training supports Burundi’s efforts to strengthen its energy infrastructure, create cost-reflective tariffs, and foster sustainable partnerships for energy development. What’s Next? As the Promotion of Small Hydropower (SHP) project concludes in June 2025, the focus will shift to: -Providing follow-up assistance to participants for the practical implementation of their knowledge. -Exploring opportunities for continued capacity building and new initiatives to expand Burundi’s energy sector. 💡 This marks a crucial step toward a sustainable and inclusive energy future for Burundi. Let’s keep the momentum going! #SustainableEnergy #SmallHydropower #CapacityBuilding #PPAs #PPPs #EnergyTransition #UNIDO #Burundi #RenewableEnergy Maria Grineva Heng LIU Sanja Komadina Eva Kremere Alvin Tepo Togba Petra Schwager Kolade Esan, PMP® Nestor Bikorimana

We are honored to be part of the steering committee. Pumped storage has a great potential!
🌍🚀Today, the Global Alliance for Pumped Storage (GAPS) launches with support from over 30 governments and international agencies to secure our future energy needs. The IHA united leaders from nations like Indonesia, the United States, Spain, Romania, and Brazil to tackle one of the biggest challenges in the renewable transition: energy storage. Through GAPS, these countries are advancing pumped storage hydropower (PSH) as the essential backbone of clean energy resilience, enabling us to support large-scale wind and solar integration. Today’s gathering establishes an intergovernmental leadership group, dedicated to promoting, scaling, and optimising PSH worldwide. This group will drive the agenda for the upcoming International Forum on Pumped Storage Hydropower in Paris on 9-10 September 2025. Together, they’re setting the stage for a decade of accelerated pumped storage development. 🔋 GAPS represents more than an alliance; it’s a global commitment to energy security, stability, and a sustainable future. https://lnkd.in/eriEn7qM #WithHydropower #3xRenewables #COP29 #NowDeliverChange Global Renewables Alliance (GRA)
