🌱 Today is World Soil Day 🌱, and this year’s theme, “Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, Manage”, couldn’t be more aligned with the exciting work we’re doing in the ScaleAgData Project!   In the Research and Innovation Lab of Soil Health, we tackle one of the EU Soil Strategy’s key objectives for 2030: improving soil health across Europe. Here’s how:   🛰️ 👨💻 Federated Learning for Soil Data: Soil data is often sensitive, but sharing it is critical for building robust models. That’s where federated learning comes in! This privacy-preserving technology allows organizations to collaborate without sharing raw data. Together with ILVO (Instituut voor Landbouw, Visserij- en Voedingsonderzoek) (Flanders, Belgium) and Spectra Lab, AUTH (Greece), we’re building federated models using Sentinel-2 data to predict topsoil health indicators. Soon, we aim to add data from the recently launched Kuva Space Hyperfield-1 and EnMAP to strengthen our models further. 🌍🛰️   📍 🗺️ Local Insights with #UAV #Hyperspectral Sensing: We’re flying VTT’s prototype hyperspectral camera using our UAVs over fields in #Flanders and Central Macedonia to generate ultra-localized maps. We aim to solve challenges like mapping soils in tree crops (vineyards and orchards), where vegetation complicates soil visibility for contemporary and future hyperspectral satellites. 🌳🌾   💡 Why is this innovative? From federated learning to hyperspectral sensing, we’re developing data-driven, scalable solutions for soil monitoring. 👋 Je vindt ons op Fructura EXPO 🍎, dé vakbeurs voor fruittelers, waar we onze oplossingen voor duurzamere en efficiëntere fruitteelt presenteren. Minister Jo Brouns, gedeputeerde Inge Moors en een delegatie Vlaamse parlementsleden brachten gisteren al een bezoek aan onze stand. We demonstreerden hoe we met technologie en data bijdragen aan de uitdagingen van de sector. Ook gingen we in gesprek met vertegenwoordigers van het Agentschap Landbouw en Zeevisserij over de toekomst van de sector. Concreet presenteren we op Fructura EXPO 2024: ● 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 💧💻, pro-actieve maatregelen tegen wateroverlast en waterschaarste in de fruitstreek, met een demo van de waterBOERometer, een online platform om de kansen en uitdagingen van fruittelers in kaart te brengen, ontwikkeld i.h.k.v het Blue Deal-project Vlaanderen WaterProof, samen met onze partner Proefcentrum Fruitteelt (pcfruit vzw). ● 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐞𝐟𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐭 🍐🛰, waarbij we met satelliet- en dronedata fruittelers ondersteunen in het voorspellen van opbrengsten, het detecteren van ziektes en het slim beheren van water en bemesting via tools zoals MAPEO en WatchITgrow. Daarnaast kunnen bezoekers kunnen via onze interactieve Waterwinst-gokmachine spelenderwijs kennismaken met de uitdagingen en oplossingen in waterbeheer (met een chocolademunt als beloning - cadeautje van de Sint 😉). Dank aan Minister Brouns en de delegatie voor hun interesse en betrokkenheid, wat van grote waarde is voor onze gezamenlijke inspanningen om de fruitteelt duurzamer en toekomstbestendig te maken.
