🦃 As #Thanksgiving day approaches, it’s worth reflecting on the systems that shape our food traditions. While it can be a meaningful time of gratitude, Thanksgiving is rooted in a history of colonization and harm to Indigenous communities—a legacy that persists in the inequities of our food systems today. 🍂 Consider this: 40% of the world’s food is wasted or lost annually, while millions face hunger. This waste also fuels 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities. This week, let’s think critically about how we honor the food on our plates. Use your purchases to support equitable food systems, plan portions wisely, and get creative with leftovers. Small actions matter, but even better is rethinking the systems that brought us to where we are today. Despite major headwinds, negotiators in Baku eked out a deal that is an important downpayment toward a safer, more equitable future. Though the agreement at least triples climate finance flowing to developing countries, the $300 billion goal is not enough. The poorest and most vulnerable nations are rightfully disappointed that wealthier countries didn’t put more money on the table when billions of people’s lives are at stake. This deal gets us off the starting block. Now the race is on to raise much more climate finance from a range of public and private sources, putting the whole financial system to work behind developing countries’ transitions. The year ahead offers numerous opportunities to raise the bar for climate finance, from development banks, the private sector, major economies and more — including through international taxes. We must seize all of them. Greater confidence that investments are coming will unlock more ambitious national climate commitments. This in turn sends a clear signal to investors to back the action we need. The hard work now begins to show a route to scaling up all sources of finance to deliver the $1.3 trillion developing countries need by 2035. A sustainable global food system depends on a strong climate finance goal. Investing in climate finance isn't just about emissions—it's about creating resilient communities worldwide where citizens can thrive. The decisions made this week will shape how we tackle climate change and food security together 🌱🌐 #COP29 #ClimateFinance #FoodSecurity #SustainableFood
The big-ticket item at COP29 is setting a new finance goal. So let’s be clear: negotiators must leave Baku with a strong agreement on international climate finance. Yet, with only days left, critical details remain uncertain. This decision will shape trust between developed and developing countries, support the world's most vulnerable communities in adapting to climate change, and drive progress toward low-carbon development. It’s also pivotal for creating feedback loops that connect finance with climate ambition. Negotiators are currently grappling with three issues at the core of the new climate finance agreement: quantity, contributors and quality. World Resources Institute’s Melanie Robinson breaks down what's needed to get a strong outcome across the finish line:

🍚 A new report from FOLU finds that 46-51% of China's agricultural emissions could be mitigated with the widespread adoption of healthy and sustainable diets. With 1.4 billion people and a prosperous economy, China is a key player in the global climate narrative. The Chinese government has set ambitious #NetZero targets, committing to peak greenhouse gas emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. Key findings from the report include: 🌽 Full implementation of the Chinese Dietary Guidelines would result in 46% fewer emissions than the business-as-usual scenario, aligning the agricultural sector with a 1.5C warming pathway. 🍐 Widespread adoption of the EAT Lancet Planetary Health Diet would result in a 51% drop compared to the business-as-usual consumption scenario. 🐖 In most provinces, reducing methane from livestock production would see the biggest impact Read the full report 👇 https://bit.ly/4eSnroB #FoodSystems #China #SustainableDiets #SustainableFood #FoodPolicy

📰 Headline from #COP29: A cohort of 30 countries that represent nearly 50% of global methane emissions from organic waste have signed a pledge to reduce their emissions in this sector. Why is this important? Food loss and waste accounts for 8-10% of total greenhouse gas emissions, and the methane produced from food in landfills is a significant contributor. 💡 In a statement, Liz Goodwin, Director of Food Loss and Waste, calls for countries to turn this commitment into action by developing policies that reduce food loss and waste, and invest in alternative processing methods for any food that is wasted. Countries have an opportunity to include diversion of food waste from landfill as an integral part of their climate strategy in their upcoming national climate commitments (NDCs), which are due in early 2025. Did you know that one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions come from our food systems? 🍽 Today at #COP29, the focus is on food, agriculture, and water. From deforestation for farmland to household food waste, our current approach to food production and consumption has a major impact on the climate. Raychel Santo of WRI Food looks at how next-generation #NDCs offer a unique opportunity to transform food systems for a sustainable future. By adopting ambitious targets for both production and demand, countries can take action to reduce emissions, restore degraded lands, improve food security, and support farmers in the face of climate change.
