In a candid interview, Milwaukee Bucks' point guard Damian Lillard acknowledged the chemistry issues he and teammate Giannis Antetokounmpo are working through, casting a spotlight on one of the NBA's most high-profile duos.
After a tough start to the season, Lillard expressed a clear need for improved accountability and communication between himself and the two-time MVP, as the Bucks aim to solidify their place as serious contenders.
Dame and Giannis still finding their groove
Speaking on the Knuckleheads podcast, Lillard opened up about the dynamics he and Antetokounmpo are grappling with on and off the court.
"Me and him [Giannis] gotta be able to hold each other accountable," Lillard explained.
He emphasized that this accountability doesn't mean frequent arguments but rather an open, honest dialogue, saying,
"I gotta be able to say somethin' to you. And you gotta be able to say somethin' to me at all times."
For Lillard, the adjustment goes beyond just forming a bond on the court.
Both he and Antetokounmpo led their former teams-Lillard with the Portland Trail Blazers and Giannis with the Bucks-and each found success with their individual styles.
Now, as they join forces, Lillard emphasized the importance of mutual trust, noting that both he and Giannis need to fully support each other's roles as top players in the league.
"He's always had to put his foot down in Milwaukee...and I've always been that way in Portland. And I think now that we're together...we both gotta look over and say, 'This a top-75 player, too.' And I gotta trust him to carry this with me," Lillard added.
Bucks expect much more from their star duo
The Lillard-Giannis pairing was expected to bring immediate results for the Bucks, and their contrasting skill sets appeared to offer a perfect balance.
However, after a turbulent 2023 season that ended with a first-round playoff exit and a coaching change, the Bucks are currently sitting at 1-3.
They suffered a double-digit loss to the Boston Celtics despite Lillard and Giannis combining for an impressive 63 points.
Yet, the team's defense remains an area of concern, as does the on-court connection between its two star players.
With new head coach Doc Rivers at the helm, the Bucks are looking to turn things around, but that will depend on how quickly Lillard and Antetokounmpo can establish the partnership needed for success.
Lillard's high-scoring capability-he's averaging 28.0 points, 6.3 assists, and 6.0 rebounds per game-demonstrates his value, yet his full impact won't be felt until he finds a rhythm with Antetokounmpo.
Lillard expressed optimism, concluding, "I think we both got to do that. After that, we got a shot. We got a shot."
