The Internal Revenue Service announced in December 2024 its plans to issue automatic payments to eligible individuals who did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns, a support that arose during the Covid-19 pandemic.
This is the Economic Impact Payment (EIP), which was paid in three rounds and the funds were distributed by the IRS and the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
When reviewing internal data, the IRS found that many eligible taxpayers filed a return but did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit, which is refundable for people who did not receive one or more Economic Impact Payments (EIP).
The amount of the payments depends on several factors, but the maximum payment is $1,400 per person, which will be issued to around one million eligible taxpayers.
What are the requirements for reimbursement and when is the $1,400 check sent?
Eligible taxpayers have already been detected in the IRS system and do not have to do anything to claim the refund. In fact, those who have a bank account registered on their 2023 return should have already received a direct deposit.
But if the way to receive refunds is by sending a check, the document will arrive at the end of January 2025 to the address that the IRS has on file.
"In an effort to minimize burden and get this money to taxpayers as quickly as possible, we are issuing these payments automatically, meaning people eligible for this relief will not have to go through the extensive process of filing an amended return to receive it," said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel
The IRS reported that almost all eligible taxpayers have already received federal stimulus payments, but there are those who still do not have it and it was detected that they filed a 2021 tax return but left the data field for the Recovery Rebate Credit blank or completed it as $0 when they were actually eligible for the credit.
