Barnsley midfielder Sam Togwell has urged boss Simon Davey to keep their squad together as the January transfer window approaches.

Skipper Brian Howard and goalkeeper Heinz Muller have both been strongly linked with moves to Premier League clubs in recent weeks.

But Togwell insists it is imperative they remain at Oakwell, if the Tykes are to shine in the second half of the season.

He said: "People might be looking at some of the players because they and the team are performing well. But in the dressing room, we have not heard anything about anyone leaving and it's important the squad is kept intact.

"At the moment, we feel that we have a good squad and if we get a few more additions we should be ok."

Togwell opened the scoring after just 16 seconds with a superb half-volley that flew past the rooted Kelvin Davis in the Southampton goal and nestled in the top corner.

The 23-year-old's first-team chances have been limited so far this-campaign by on-loan Everton midfielder, Anderson de Silva. But with the Brazilian now back with his parent club, Togwell has started the last two games.

He added: "I'm pleased with the way I'm performing at the moment.

Obvioulsy, I've had a bit of bad luck with Anderson coming in, but now it's my chance to stake a claim and I think I've done that over the last couple of games."

Jamal Campbell-Ryce crashed in a blockbuster after 34 minutes to put Barnsley firmly in control.

Saints manager George Burley took drastic action on the hour, replacing top-scorer Stern John with Bradley Wright-Phillips.

His impact was instant as he slipped home a Grzregorz Rasiak pass on 61 minutes. And nine minutes later they combined again, Wright-Phillips turning and shooting on a sixpence.

Saints were denied a late winner when Muller enhanced his credentials, defying Wright-Phillips and Rasiak.

Boss Burley said: "Their keeper made a good save from Bradley and then Rasiak had a header where he normally would have scored."
