There's nothing more relaxing than cuddling under a heavy comforter or an electric blanket after a stressful day. But if you need help unwinding, you should consider a weighted blanket. Typically filled with glass beads or plastic pellets, the gentle pressure can have a calming effect, especially if it has a soft, minky cover. It can feel like you're being comfortably held or hugged.

To help you find the best weighted blanket for your needs, we tested some of the top-rated products. The Gravity Blanket is our top pick in terms of functionality, construction, and coziness. However, there are a variety of high-quality options for a weighted blanket on Amazon and other websites that you may want to consider.

The weight was just right, providing a comforting amount of pressure without feeling suffocating, and because the blanket isn’t too thick, you don’t get too hot while sleeping under it.

Best Overall
Gravity Blanket (15lb)

Sizes: Single or Queen/King Weights: 15, 25, or 35 pounds Material: Micro-plush Filling: Glass beads

After testing the 15-pound version of the internet sensation, we can confidently say the Gravity Blanket is worth the hype. This was the most luxurious and well-crafted weighted blanket we used, and while the price isn’t cheap, its quality construction will likely last for years.

At 72 by 48 inches, the “Single” is roughly the size of a small throw. The velvety cover feels extremely high quality, and it attaches to the inner sheet at eight points with fabric ties and/or buttons, ensuring the sheet doesn’t shift around during use.

It’s incredibly enjoyable to use. The weight distribution is just right, providing a comforting amount of pressure without feeling suffocating, and because the blanket isn’t too thick, you don’t get too hot while sleeping under it. Plus, the cover feels incredibly luxurious and cozy. It’s also less bulky and easier to fold up and store than several other options.

Weighted blankets are often difficult to clean and seldom machine-washable, but the Gravity Blanket makes it easy. The removable cover can be machine washed, then reattached to the inner sheet using either buttons or ties, for greater ease than any other weighted blanket cover we tested. Between its many features and solid construction, the Gravity Blanket is our top choice in terms of quality, performance, and comfort.

Pros

  • Long-lasting

  • Equally distributed weight

  • Easy to clean

Cons

  • More expensive than most

This blanket is enjoyable to sleep and relax under, as it conforms nicely to your body without being cumbersome.

Best Value
YnM Weighted Blanket (Twin, 12lb)

Sizes: Twin, Full, Queen, King Weights: 10 options ranging from 5-30 pounds Material: 100% cotton Filling: Glass beads

If you’re not completely sold on the idea of a weighted blanket, you might not want to spend several hundred dollars on a high-end one. In this case, we recommend you check out the YnM Weighted Blanket, a budget-friendly option that performs just as well as many products that are twice the price.

The YnM wasn't the coziest choice, with a somewhat rough cotton exterior, but it’s well-constructed and a good size and weight. We tested the 15-pound, 48-by-72-inch full-size model, but this blanket is also available in different sizes and weights. If you don’t like how the blanket feels, it has eight loops on the corners/sides for attaching a duvet cover.

This blanket was enjoyable to sleep and relax under, and conformed nicely to our tester's body without being cumbersome. It was a bit thinner than other models, making it easy to store and preventing overheating while sleeping under it.

However, the cleaning instructions for the sheet were confusing. We assume that calls to "bask" the sheet in the sun and "whip lightly" mean to line dry and beat it, but if you’re going to purchase this blanket, we’d recommend getting a duvet cover so you can just wash that instead.

Pros

  • Easy to store

  • Conforms to your body

Cons

  • Cleaning instructions aren't clear

Other Weighted Blankets We Tested

Product image of Nuzzie Knit Weighted Blanket
Nuzzie Knit Weighted Blanket

Sizes: Kids, Full, Queen, King Weights: Each size has one weight: 8, 15, 20, or 25 pounds. Material: 100% recycled polyester Filling: Fabric filling

The Nuzzie’s unique knit weave makes it stand out in both appearance and functionality. The texture is more aesthetically pleasing and interesting than many of the others we’ve tested—it’s also what gives the blanket its heft.

The knit structure has one other major upshot: The blanket sleeps far cooler than bead-filled options that are wrapped in ultra-plush (and therefore insulating) covers. The Nuzzie’s weave allows for far greater airflow and ventilation as you snooze.

The blanket’s bulk and heft is its biggest downside. If you’re using this blanket seasonally, it may prove challenging to store. What’s more, though it’s technically machine-washable and dryer-friendly, the weight could make it nearly impossible to launder at home, as most washers top out at a 20-pound weight limit.

Due to its size, the Nuzzie arrived vacuum-sealed. The wrapping compacted it slightly (though it was still the size of an overstuffed king pillow). When first opened, the blanket has a slight odor which might take a day or so to dissipate. Nuzzie offers a 30-day “happiness guarantee,” so you have some assurance that if the blanket doesn’t work for you, you won’t be stuck with a hefty piece of bedding and money down the drain.

Pros

  • Cooler than most weighted blankets

  • Appealing texture

  • Easy to wash

Cons

  • Bulky and potentially difficult to store

Product image of Casper Weighted Blanket
Casper Weighted Blanket

Sizes: 50” x 70” throw Weights: 10, 15, or 20 pounds. Material: inner liner is 100% polyester; outer shell is 100% cotton Filling: Micro beads, 100% polyester batting

As soon as we took it out of the box, it was clear that the Casper Weighted Blanket is a well-made product. The fabric was thick, the construction neat and sturdy, and the weight was just enough to keep our tester cozy without being overwhelming. The brand may be best known for its boxed mattresses, but it’s clear that a lot of thought and effort went into making a quality product.

The outer shell is warm, yet breathable, and the polyester batting inside prevents you from feeling the blanket’s beads. The microbeads themselves are held in place by quilted channels, and the blanket drapes around your form delightfully, making it feel like a cozy hug.

As much as our tester enjoyed this blanket, a few factors kept it from ranking higher. First, it doesn’t have a cover or loops for attaching one. This means it’s spot-clean only, which isn’t preferable, especially if you like to snack while curled up on the couch.

Additionally, while the fabric was soft to the touch, it was nowhere near as luxurious as the velvety Gravity Blanket. It was also a magnet for pet hair, and needed to be cleaned almost daily. Overall, we loved the Casper Weighted Blanket. But while it’s a great purchase, we prefer the Gravity Blanket, especially since the two are similarly priced.

Pros

  • Thick fabric

  • Feels like a hug

Cons

  • Spot-clean only

Product image of BlanQuil Chill (15lb)
BlanQuil Chill (15lb)

Sizes: 48” x 74” Weights: 15 or 20 pounds Material: Micro-fiber Filling: Glass beads

If you frequently get hot during the night, you might do well with the BlanQuil Chill. This unique weighted blanket has a cooling cover that’s actually cold to the touch. The cooling cover kept the weighted sheet in place well, and can go in both the washing machine and dryer.

The “chill” shell is incredibly effective at temperature regulation—our tester slept comfortably under it all night, and she almost always overheats with heavy blankets. However, the material itself wasn't particularly welcoming to the touch. It was literally cool, which didn't make it particularly cozy for curling up on the couch. It was even a bit jarring when our tester first climbed into bed.

This cooling weighted blanket was nicely made and easy to care for, and we think it's a good option for those who tend to overheat. It’s just not the best choice for cuddling up with.

Pros

  • Easy to care for

  • Keeps you cool

Cons

  • Not the coziest blanket

Product image of Tranquility Weighted Blanket (Twin, 12lb)
Tranquility Weighted Blanket (Twin, 12lb)

Sizes: 48” x 72” Weights: 10, 12, or 18 pounds. Material: 100% polyester Filling: Glass beads The Tranquility Weighted Throw Blanket is another solid budget choice. What’s unique about this weighted blanket is that one side is a cozy plush while the other is plain polyester. This means you don’t need to put a cover on it, which saves you some money, but it also can only be spot cleaned—not ideal for frequent use. (Newer Tranquility blankets feature a removable cover.)

This was one of the thinnest blankets we tested, which made it easy to fold up and kept it from getting too hot. However, it didn't seem to be particularly well-made—some of the stitching was already coming loose when it arrived. Overall, this is a decent, affordable option, but it would be best for occasional use. If you want a sturdier blanket for a similar price, we’d recommend the YnM, which is roughly the same price.

Pros

  • Inexpensive

  • Easy to store

Cons

  • Spot-clean only

Product image of Yaasa Signature Weighted Blanket
Yaasa Signature Weighted Blanket

Sizes: 48” x 72” Weights: 10, 15, or 20 pounds. Material: Cover is 100% polyester fleece. Inner blanket is 59% bamboo rayon, 41% polyester Filling: 92% silicon beads, 8% polyester fiber

The Yaasa Signature Weighted Blanket is best for those who sleep really cold, or who live in cooler climates. Between the ultra-fuzzy cover and inner bead-filled component, it was far too warm for our tester’s comfort. Even in the middle of a Northeast winter, she felt overheated much of the night.

Unfortunately, the cover’s design flaws aren’t relegated to its warmth. The cover is a bit oversized, but feels enormous if all of the anchors aren’t secured. The cover is also extremely difficult to remove. The fleecy fabric crosses the zipper’s path, requiring you to painstakingly pull the fleece to either side.

It’s not a bad blanket, but it’s also far from the best. Most people will be better served by other options on this list.

Pros

  • Distributes weight well

  • Anchors secure the cover

Cons

  • Sleeps hot

  • Difficult to use zipper

Product image of Luna Weighted Blanket (Queen, 20lb)
Luna Weighted Blanket (Queen, 20lb)

Sizes: 41” x 60”, 48” x 72”, 60” x 80”, 80” x 87” Weights: Ranges from 5-25 pounds. Material: 100% Cotton Filling: Glass beads

The Luna Weighted Blanket was pretty unmemorable—it’s not bad; it just didn’t wow us.

The outer fabric is made from 100 percent organic cotton, which was soft but not as welcoming as some of the other plush blankets. The Luna blanket is supposedly made with breathability in mind, but one night our tester ended up getting too hot and pushing it off.

Drawbacks aside, this is a solidly built blanket. The stitching seemed sound and we like that it's big enough to share, unlike many others. It comes with loops where you can attach a duvet cover, which we’d probably recommend since it’s hand-wash only.

Pros

  • Solidly built

Cons

  • Not as soft as other blankets

  • Hand-wash only

Product image of Quility Weighted Blanket (Queen, 25lb)
Quility Weighted Blanket (Queen, 25lb)

Sizes: 36” x 48”, 41” x 60”, 48” x 72”, 60” x 80”, 86” x 92” Weights: 8 sizes from 5-30 pounds. Material: 100% Cotton Filling: Glass beads

The Quility Premium Adult Weighted Blanket’s quality was underwhelming compared to some of the other products we tested. While many high-end options came with the cover already attached, our tester had to put on the Quility cover herself, which can be challenging with a heavier model. Plus, it only attaches with thin fabric straps and we can see them eventually ripping with a heavier blanket.

The cover was cozy, but it was quite thin and felt like a cheap fabric compared to the Gravity Blanket or BlanQuil Quilted. The weighted sheet also bunched up quite a bit during use and you may overheat when sleeping under this thick blanket—our tester definitely did!

Pros

  • Available in many sizes and weights

  • Cozy

Cons

  • Fabric feels cheap

Product image of BlanQuil Quilted (20lb)
BlanQuil Quilted (20lb)

Sizes: 48” x 72” Weights: 15 or 20 pounds. Material: Polyester Blend Filling: Glass beads The BlanQuil Quilted Weighted Blanket fell short of expectations during testing. The micro-plush cover was warm and welcoming to curl up under, but we were a bit disappointed in its performance. It didn’t do a good job holding the inner sheet in place, and the blanket kept bunching up during use. When we tried adjusting the blanket, we'd often end up pulling the cover and not the inner sheet. It was frustrating.

This blanket and its cover were one of the thickest we tested, and our tester ended up tossing it off each time she used it because she got too warm. It’s not a horrible blanket, but for the price, we expect something more functional.

Pros

  • Warm

  • Nice fabric

Cons

  • Inner sheet bunches up

Product image of Bearaby Napper Weighted Blanket
Bearaby Napper Weighted Blanket

Sizes: 40” x 64”, 40” x 72”, 45” x 72”, or 48” x 72” Weights: 10, 15, 20, or 25 pounds. (Each size has one weight.) Material: 10 pound blanket is 100% organic cotton, all others 95% organic cotton/5% spandex Filling: N/A

The Bearaby Napper is different from other weighted blankets in some key ways. Perhaps most notably, its eye-catching knit construction is designed to resemble the chunky knit blankets that have been trendy in recent years. Additionally, it doesn’t use glass or plastic pellets to provide added weight—instead, relies on multiple layers of cotton for its heft.

The Bearaby is undeniably more visually appealing than many other weighted blankets—you could drape this throw over the end of your bed as a statement piece, especially since it’s available in trendy colors. However, testing made it clear that this blanket’s aesthetics outpace its performance.

For one, the 15-pound Bearaby Napper didn't feel nearly as heavy as other 15-pound weighted blankets. Without beads inside, it didn't hug our tester the way others did—something many people look for from a weighted blanket. Additionally, our tester's feet and toes often got stuck in the loops, making it awkward to lie under and hard to shift around. Plus, the holes made it near impossible to keep warm underneath the Bearaby Napper.

When we slept with this blanket, we had to put another blanket over the top, as the Bearaby did a poor job insulating. Finally, it’s bulky, and its cotton fabric isn't all that soft—it’s not the type of material you want to snuggle up with.

If you’re looking for an aesthetically appealing weighted blanket, the Bearaby is one of the most attractive we’ve tested and would make a great statement piece in your home. However, if you want the relaxation associated with weighted blankets, your money is better spent elsewhere—especially given the price.

Pros

  • Unique construction

Cons

  • Doesn't retain heat

  • Expensive

How We Tested Weighted Blankets

a person reading under the Nuzzie weighted blanket
Credit: Reviewed / Betsey Goldwasser

Our testers curled up with weighted blankets overnight and during the day.

Our testers used each weighted blanket in a variety of situations. They slept overnight with each one, and took naps under them as well. They also used each one around the house, relaxing with them on the couch or bed during their waking hours for additional assessment.

They evaluated each blanket for setup, ease-of-use, construction, and care. If the blanket came with a cover, our testers considered how easy it was to attach and remove, and also checked the blankets' cleaning instructions. Finally, testers considered the construction of the blankets, noting whether there were any seams unraveling and how durable and luxurious the fabric felt.

If the blanket came with a cover, I judged how easy it was to put on and take off, and I also cleaned each one. I also considered the construction of the blankets, noting whether there were any seams unraveling and how durable and luxurious the fabric felt.

What You Should Know Before Buying a Weighted Blanket

If you’ve never seen a weighted blanket, you might not know what to expect from one. They’re typically filled with small beads (usually plastic or glass), which gives them extra weight and helps them conform to your body better. Most weighted blankets have a “boxed” appearance, as stitching helps keep the beads evenly distributed.

Weighted blankets can vary in fabric and size. Most are made for roughly the size of a small throw and intended for one person, but larger options exist. High-end weighted blankets often come with a removable cover that’s soft to the touch and easy to clean, while lower-cost options typically provide you with a weighted sheet.

What Are the Benefits of Weighted Blankets?

Weighted blankets are meant to provide what’s called “deep touch pressure” or “deep pressure stimulation”—a firm, gentle squeezing similar to being hugged or held by another person. For many, this feeling is quite comforting and soothing.

Per chief scientist Dr. Dave Ellerby: “Although there isn't a whole lot of research on weighted blankets, there's evidence they boost levels of the sleep hormone melatonin. For some people, the gentle pressure from the blankets also reduces anxiety and improves sleep quality. They're not guaranteed to help, but if you have problems sleeping, weighted blankets are worth a try.”

It’s important to note that weighted blankets won’t treat or cure conditions like insomnia or anxiety—they’re just a way to soothe your body and potentially mitigate some symptoms and reduce stress. Anecdotally, our testers found the blankets helped them overnight.

Camryn found the blankets helped her fall asleep a little faster than normal, and that the pressure was calming—helping her unwind at the end of the day under gentle weight that felt similar to cuddling with another person. Lindsey also felt as though she slept more soundly when using a weighted blanket, as opposed to her typical bedding that has minimal heft.

What Is the Best Weight for a Weighted Blanket?

One of the most common questions about weighted blankets is how to choose an appropriate weight for a good night's rest. Most brands recommend using a weighted blanket that’s around 10% of your body weight, give or take some wiggle room for personal preference.

To get a better sense of an appropriate weight, our testers tried blankets that ranged in weights—including 12, 15, 20, and 25-pound blankets. (Their opinions on whether individual blankets were too heavy or too light weren’t factored into the overall rankings, since ideal weight will vary from person to person.)

Both testers found the 15- and 20-pound blankets were cozy and easy to manage, even though the 20-pound options were significantly above the recommended 10% of each tester's body weight. For sleeping overnight, both testers preferred the heavier feeling of the 20-pound blankets, coming to about 13% of their individual body weights.

That said, the 12-pound blankets were entirely too light, and the 25-pound blankets felt suffocating. Based on these experiences, we’d recommend sticking with a blanket that’s 10% to 13% of your body weight.

Can You Wash A Weighted Blanket?

Some weighted blankets are machine washable, but for those that aren’t, you can opt for a removable cover that can be cleaned by itself, or hand-wash the blanket using a few at-home essentials.

Other Important Considerations

These are the best weighted blankets available today.

In addition to choosing an appropriate weight, you’ll also want to consider warmth and cleaning when you’re shopping for a weighted blanket.

In addition to choosing an appropriate weight, you’ll want to consider warmth and ease of cleaning when shopping for a weighted blanket. Thick blankets with plush covers tend to get quite warm during the night, so hot sleepers may want to consider a thinner blanket or one with some type of cooling technology.
