Will Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series get Android 14 update?

Published

on

As Google has started the development of Android 14, Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra users may have been wondering about the One UI 6.0 upgrade. This story will discuss the Android 14 progress, Samsung One UI 6.0 Beta/Stable plan, and Galaxy Note 20 series’ eligibility.

Google began the Android 14 Developer Preview in early February 2023. A month later, the company kicked off the second Developer Preview build to Pixel users who sideloaded the initial preview. As per the latest roadmap, Android 14 could reach the platform stability milestone by August 2023.

Android 14

A few days ago, the Mountain View company started the Public Beta program of Android 14 OS. Pixel users can get the latest OS over the air by enrolling in the Android Beta Program. Before reaching the stable mark, the new OS version will get incremental bug fix updates and major Beta versions.

One UI 6.0

Based on Android 14, Samsung will introduce the One UI 6.0 software at its annual developers’ conference later this year. Before the announcement, the company will hopefully begin the One UI 6 Beta testing for some flagship models such as the Galaxy S23 and S22 series.

Will my Galaxy Note 20 get Android 14?

Talking about the Galaxy Note 20, consumers have to stick to the Android 13-based One UI 5.1 software. Both LTE and 5G models of the Note 20 will not receive the next major Android upgrade. The company has ended major upgrade support later last year.

Will my Galaxy Note 20 Ultra get Android 14?

Galaxy Note 20 Ultra launched alongside the Galaxy Note 20 at Samsung Unpacked in August 2020. Similarly, the Ultra variant is also ineligible for the Android 14-based One UI 6.0 upgrade. Not only LTE, but the 5G version has also lost eligibility for OS upgrades with Android 13.

Here’s why

Note 20 was the first Galaxy lineup that debuted with support for three generations of OS upgrades. Out of the box, both flagships run Android 10-based One UI 2.5. Starting Android 11, the Korean tech giant delivered Android 12 and Android 13 software updates, completing the promise it did during the launch.

Samsung 2023 OS Policy

In early 2022, Samsung revised its software updates policy, promising up to four generations of OS and five years of security updates to select Galaxy devices. Apart from flagships launched after the Galaxy S21 series, the same policy is also applied to select A and M series phones.

James is the lead content creator on Sammy Fans and mostly works on Samsung's firmware section. His first phone was the Galaxy S4 and continues to get new S series devices. Most of the time, James tries to learn about new technologies and gadgets but he also sneaks a bit of free time to nearby rivers and nature.

Google Pixel 9 to sport Samsung’s M14 OLED, better than Galaxy S24 series

Google Pixel 9 design

Samsung is reportedly supplying M14 OLED to Google for the Pixel 9 series. The report indicates that Google’s upcoming flagship phones will outshine Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series in terms of display technology.

According to ETNews, Google Pixel 9 series would be equipped with M14 OLED supplied by Samsung Display. The report also mentions that Samsung’s latest flagship phones – Galaxy S24 series – apparently use older M13 displays.

Earlier, Google confirmed to hold its Made by Google event in August. This year, the company is holding its hardware-specific event almost two months early. It would help Google better compete with Samsung and Apple.

In addition, Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro models will also have Samsung’s latest display technology. These flagship phones from both vendors would make the Galaxy S24 Ultra lag in competition with older display tech.

The last year’s Pixel 9 series also debuted upgraded display panels. Google introduced Actua and Super Actua display techs, offering brighter, longer-lasting, and/or more efficient displays than the Galaxy S23 series.
