Samsung to introduce ‘AstroPortrait’ Mode for Expert RAW app

Samsung recently updated the Expert RAW app for Galaxy S23 series and Galaxy Z Fold 5 smartphones, which adds a neutral density (ND) filter mode. The company is now reportedly enhancing its camera capabilities with a new “AstroPortrait Mode” in its Samsung Expert RAW app.

The AstroPortrait name itself defines its working, suggesting a combination of astrophotography and portrait. Through this feature, users can capture the night sky with a person in the foreground. The process involves taking a photo with the flash, then removing the person to allow the device to capture the stars, creating a composite image.

This feature was uncovered through an APK teardown, which reveals Samsung’s aim to surpass its competitors in smartphone photography. Vivo’s X100 Pro recently debuted a similar feature called Astro Portrait.

The term “lab” found within the app’s code suggests that AstroPortrait may be introduced as an experimental feature, joining other advanced camera functions such as traditional astrophotography, multiple exposure shots, and simulated neutral density (ND) filter effects.

Everyone is eagerly waiting for Samsung’s next product launch, Galaxy Z Fold 6, which will happen in late July or early August. There is speculation that AstroPortrait could be the highlight of this launch.
