ABSTRACT: This paper aims to examine and analyse from the perspective of Critical Legal Studies whether, and to what extent, the concept of law relates to the economic structure of society. Furthermore, the aim is to shed light on the potential problem of the perception and generation of legitimacy derived from economic interests. More precisely, this paper will investigate the relationship between the economic structure of the French society in 1789, the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen and the philosophy of the Enlightenment.
