Susan Lucci Revealed the ‘Best Answer Anyone’ Ever Gave Her About Embracing Her 70s

Susan Lucci gets better and better with every passing year. At 77, she’s not only not slowing down anytime soon, but she’s giving her loyal fans some words of wisdom.

In a recent discussion with People, Lucci revealed the best piece of advice she got about growing older. It all started with a phone call to her mother Jeanette Lucci, who tragically passed on June 2021 at 104 years old.

“I remember when I turned 60. I called my mother,” Susan said. “I was having a lot of trouble with that particular number, and I called my mother and I said, ‘Mom, how did you deal with it? And how are you dealing with now?’”

Susan added, “And there was a little pause on the other end and she said, ‘Well, I just don’t think about it.’ And I thought, you know what? That is the best answer anyone could give me. … Don’t put any labels on yourself. Don’t let the number define you.”

Now, this isn’t the first time Lucci has talked about not letting age or social standards surrounding that age define your path. Back in 2023, in a rare interview with Entertainment Tonight, she discussed how she’s not only never considering retirement, but she actually has a great disdain for that term. “That word is a dirty word to me,” she joked.

(And this is a repeated sentiment from 2018, when she told Closer Weekly: “That is not a word in my vocabulary or my radar! I love what I do! I feel very lucky and grateful to get to do what I do!”)
