Simone Biles’ Husband Is Proving He’s Her Biggest Cheerleader After Controversial Comments

Simone Biles has made her third Olympics team and she’s headed to Paris in hopes of nabbing another gold medal or two. However, things look a bit different from her last two quads at the Summer Games, she now has her husband, Jonathan Owens, cheering her on — and the world is watching.

Owens caught heat late last year when an interview with The Pivot turned into an internet catastrophe for him. The Chicago Bears safety claimed he had never heard of Biles before they matched on the celebrity dating app, Raya. “When she won the Olympics, I was in college, and we didn’t have NBC, we didn’t have Olympics channels, and we were in [training] camp in late July, early August,” he said. “So, I’m not paying attention. I never had a moment where I would have watched [her perform].”

Things only got worse when host Ryan Clark jokingly asked Owens if he thought he was “the catch” in their marriage — and that’s when things seriously went downhill. “I always say that the men are the catch,” he responded. Oops, the football player didn’t seem to understand how protective gymnastics fans (aka the gymternet) are of Biles. She’s a queen, she’s the GOAT, and no one messes with that status. Owens seemed to have learned his hard lesson after being labeled “Simone Biles’ husband” from here on out.

The 28-year-old NFL athlete was seen cheering and applauding for his wife at the Sunday, June 30 Olympic Trials in Minneapolis. He knew the cameras were on him and he put on a good show while looking genuinely happy for Biles’ latest accomplishment. So, will fans see him in Paris to watch his wife make history once again? The answer is yes, but his time will be limited at the Summer Games. “The Bears are actually granting him a couple of days off from training camp, so he’ll be there, yes,” Biles happily shared in a press conference after the team was selected. “For just a short little time.”

Biles seemed pleased that Owens could catch a glimpse of her gymnastics world since the Tokyo Olympics were COVID-restricted and she suffered from a case of the twisties. “Anytime we can show up for one another in support, we just get super excited because our schedules don’t align that much,” Biles summed up. “So, whenever it does, it’s really important for the both of us to show up in support.” The case is closed on Owens’ controversial statements, and he knows he’s been put on notice because Biles is the GOAT.
