When the brilliant team of producers behind Shondaland’s hit Netflix series Bridgerton selected Jonathan Bailey to play Anthony — the eldest Bridgerton son and the viscount of their noble house — perhaps we weren't quite aware of the new era of unholy thirst that we would go on to usher in.
To be fair, yes, season one introduced Bailey as Anthony without his shirt, his abs looking every bit like something Michelangelo might’ve carved. And certainly the team — and especially costume designer Sophie Canale — knew what they were doing in season two when they had him emerge from a lake dripping wet in a white blouson clinging to his body like butter cascading down a stack of hot flapjacks.
But now, with Bailey currently part of the worldwide smash hit Wicked, fan appreciation has gone to an entirely different level. And look, we get it. Bridgerton is a romantic drama, and the lead in a rom-dram based on an equally seductive book series has to lean into the, ahem, physicality of his character from time to time. But Bailey is much more than a smoke show. Part of the reason he was cast as Anthony Bridgerton is because he’s a marvelous and highly skilled and trained actor.
He was performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company and appearing in London’s prestigious West End theater scene before he could drive.
He’s won rave reviews for his turn in King Lear.
The late, great Stephen Sondheim was said to be so enamored with Bailey, so taken with his Olivier Award-winning performance in the hit West End production of Company, that he uttered, “Be still, my beating heart.”
Yet, judging by the lead-up to the November 22 premiere of Wicked, few seemed to care that the man can act. There was little discourse about his training in ballet or gushing over his charity work for LGBTQ youth. Nope. People just wanted to talk about his thighs.
A photo-call for Wicked in Australia a few weeks back really showed how much some of y’all are losing all restraint. At said event, Bailey posed in a simple, demure pair of black shorts — shorts responsible for instigating some of the randiest and most unhinged social media posts to ever exist.
“Muscled thighs in full display,” one X user said. “Save me.” Bailey in “itty-bitty shorts has us weak in the knees!” another declared. Even his Wicked co-star Jeff Goldblum couldn’t resist noticing his “well-formed calves and thighs,” calling them “fantastic.” Some of the less pearl-clutching sentiments go something like “His sex appeal should be a controlled substance.” Y’all, do your parents know you talk like this in the streets?!
Now that Wicked is out, the spiciness has only intensified, and honestly, we’re a little bit worried. Reactions to his scenes range from mildly titillated to full-on frothing lust, especially among people also discovering/recalling his turn in the Showtime series Fellow Travelers. Do you hear yourselves? “Jonathan Bailey even has sexual chemistry with his own reflection.” “Criminally [doable].” Some of you are even trying to leap onto the screen!
Please, people: Exercise care and caution, and make sure your device insurance is up to date.
Yes, even though it’s impossible to see Mr. Bailey and not notice that he’s the winner of a genetic lottery, we would gently implore all frenzied fans to remember the attributes he’s cultivated through training and hard work. The depth and charisma he’s given Anthony Bridgerton — a complicated character dealing with the loss of his father, big responsibilities as head of the house, and the never-ending trials of finding love and maintaining a high-profile relationship — are nothing short of remarkable. That’s what we are proudest of about our Jonny, the chap we are happy to let you all claim as the internet’s official boyfriend. For now, anyway: Don’t forget he’ll be back for Bridgerton season four. Until then, tame yourselves!
