This thesis examines the sound reception mechanism of Cuvier's beaked whales through finite element analysis. The thesis:
1) Develops a finite element model of the whale's tympanoperiotic complex to simulate sound reception.
2) Applies boundary conditions representing bone conduction via the ossicular chain and pressure loading through fat bodies.
3) Varies mesh discretization, loading parameters, and damping to evaluate their effects on the structure's vibration response.
The results provide insight into the hearing capabilities of Cuvier's beaked whales and how their auditory system compares to other marine mammals.
