Press Release | Spencer West LLP supports property investor in purchase of derelict cinema, helping provide new homes for Bassetlaw District residents

4 April 2023
Spencer West Commercial and Real Estate Partner Keira Rawden completed the purchase of a former Worksop cinema and theatre on behalf of her property investor client Kevin McDonnell and other investors.

Originally a Miners’ Welfare Hall which first opened in 1926, the building that was later converted into a cinema, has stood empty since 2013. Sold by Bassetlaw District Council, the investor has submitted plans to convert the neglected building into 21 self-contained apartments.

Commenting on the purchase, Keira said: “This was an exciting opportunity for my client to purchase an old building and convert it into flats which will enhance the neighbourhood and provide more homes for the community,” before adding: “even the old cinema seats were still in place.”

The development will greatly benefit local residents, with a dramatic improvement in the appearance of the currently derelict site. Once approved, the provision of 21 new homes will also support the Draft Bassetlaw Local Plan, which addresses challenges with strategic housing provision, contributing towards the government’s requirement for 10,013 homes to be built in Bassetlaw by 2037.*
