WNBA rookie and former LSU women’s basketball star Angel Reese is the newest owner of the DC Power Football Club, the women’s soccer team announced Tuesday.
Reese paid cash for a 5% stake in the franchise, according to a source with knowledge of the deal, who was granted anonymity because the details are private. The club plays in the USL Super League and begins its inaugural season in August 2024.
The source said the club had been in discussions with Reese since she was at LSU and wanted her a part of the ownership group because they felt it aligned with her mission of empowering female athletes.
Washington Nationals pitcher Josiah Grey is also an investor in the franchise and has a stake worth a little less than Reese’s, the source said. The Nationals did not respond to a request for comment.
Now in her rookie season with the WNBA’s Chicago Sky, Reese grew up 40 miles from D.C. in Baltimore and attended the University of Maryland before transferring to LSU, where she helped the Tigers win a national championship in 2023.
“I want to help grow women’s sports and elevate female athletes across the board,” Reese said in a statement. “We’re taking over, and I’m honored to be able to support Power FC and invest in women’s soccer in the DMV community.”
The announcement of Reese into the ownership group comes on the heels of the franchise unveiling its logo, crest and name on Monday. The team will play its home matches at Audi Field and share the stadium with the NWSL’s Washington Spirit and MLS’ D.C. United, which is a founding owner of the franchise.
“Power FC’s identity is deeply rooted in the dynamic spirit and resilience of its hometown, Washington, D.C.,” Jordan Stuart, the team’s president, said in a statement.
Including D.C., the league has eight teams across the country in Brooklyn, N.Y.; Charlotte, N.C,; Dallas; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Lexington, Ky.; Spokane, Wash.; and Tampa Bay.
Reese, who was selected seventh in the WNBA draft by the Sky, said during her introductory press conference with the team that she wants to expand her business portfolio in her career. She has had sponsorship deals with Reebok, Panini America, Beats by Dre and other companies.
