Major League Soccer (MLS) is jumping on the docuseries bandwagon with a new partnership with Apple TV+ and Box to Box Films, the producers of Formula 1: Drive to Survive and Apple’s pro-surfing doc Make or Break.
The eight-part documentary series, currently in pre-production, will offer a “never-before-seen insider’s view into the league” while spotlighting all the biggest moments of the upcoming 2024 season. While MLS did not disclose which teams or players will be in the spotlight, the league said fans will have unprecedented access to players, coaches and teams from preseason to the 2024 MLS Cup final.
“This is not just a docuseries,” said Seth Bacon, executive VP of media for MLS, in an email. “It’s an invitation to fans to dive deep into the heart and soul of MLS.”
The currently untitled series joins Apple’s growing nonfiction sports programming, including Apple’s Messi Meets America, a six-part series also produced in association with MLS, featuring Lionel Messi’s debut with Inter Miami, and the upcoming Messi’s World Cup: The Rise of a Legend, about his FIFA World Cup appearances with the Argentina national team.
“Soccer is the fastest growing sport in America,” said Paul Martin, the co-founder and executive producer of Box to Box Films in an email. “We are excited to collaborate with Apple and MLS to bring the sports documentary of the future and tell the complete story of the 2024 MLS season.”
Last year, Apple and MLS began a landmark $2.5 billion, 10-year broadcast deal that will see every match streamed on the tech giant’s platform through MLS Season Pass. The subscription service is available only on the Apple TV app and allows fans in more than 100 countries and regions to watch every MLS match with no blackouts.
MLS will kick off its 29th season in 2024, featuring 30 clubs across the United States and Canada. A new expansion team in San Diego will make its debut in 2025.
