Tottenham transfer news: Harry Kane contingency plan could go up in smoke as Real Madrid covet £86m Conte target
Real Madrid are reportedly interested in a move for a Serie A striker Antonio Conte is keeping a close eye on if Harry Kane decides to quit Tottenham next summer.
Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez is enjoying another strong campaign despite the San Siro outfit’s struggles so far this term, having been involved in six goals in 13 games.
The Argentina international was outstanding as Inter drew 3-3 with Barcelona at the Nou Camp on Wednesday evening. Indeed, Martinez scored and added an assist in the topsy-turvy clash in Catalonia.
Earlier this month, Italian outlet CMW revealed that Spurs will move for Martinez if Kane leaves.
The England skipper has been strongly linked with Bayern Munich. But he has so far given no indication that he is pushing for an exit.
Kane has enjoyed arguably his strongest start to a season and appears to be content under Conte.
However, if he does decide for a change of scenery then sporting director Fabio Paratici’s plan is to reportedly bring Martinez to north London.
Real Madrid’s reported interest throws a spanner in the works though, while Manchester United are also known to be keen.
Real view Martinez as Benzema replacement
CMW now claims that the Spanish giants view Martinez as the perfect long-term replacement for Karim Benzema.
In some ways Real are in a similar situation to Tottenham, in that they both may need to replace talismanic No.9s in the near future.
However, Martinez will not cheap, with Inter valuing the 25-year-old at a whopping £86million.
The Argentine is also adaptable and can play in the No.10 role if required. That appears to suit Spurs more than Real, given how Kane has also adapted his game to drop deeper.
As for Real, Benzema will be 35 in December and is out of contract next summer. And while the LaLiga side are expected to offer the Frenchman a new deal, the chance to bring in Martinez to firstly play alongside him and then eventually replace Benzema makes perfect sense.
Kane may be swayed by goals record
As for Kane’s future, Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League goalscoring record remains in his sights. The England skipper is currently 69 goals behind the Blackburn and Newcastle legend’s 260 strikes.
But the chances of Kane swapping Tottenham for another Premier League side all but died after previous suitors Manchester City snapped up goal-machine Erling Haaland.
At his current rate of scoring, Kane would arguably need another three seasons to pass Shearer’s haul. But that would take him past his 32nd birthday and could end up costing him a lucrative move abroad.
To that end, the Spurs legend faces a tough decision this summer. Especially if his boyhood club misses out on silverware again.
Tottenham are next in action when they host Everton in the Premier League on Saturday evening.
