DJI launches new Osmo Mobile 6 phone gimbal

Just like phones, phone accessories also get annual updates. And DJI’s Osmo Mobile gimbal is no exception. The Chinese company has launched a new phone stabiliser, the Osmo Mobile 6, with a new Quick Launch feature that’s said to make it three times quicker to get up and running.

It’s interesting that DJI has returned to Osmo Mobile rather than the OM abbreviation it has favoured for the past couple of years. But that’s not really important: it’s the new features you’ll care about.

The gimbal, which shares a very similar design to the OM 5 (reviewed), now has a small status screen so you can see at a glance which mode it’s in as well as how much battery power remains. There’s also a new Side Wheel for controlling focus and zoom to enable more cinematic shots.

The gimbal is available to buy immediately from DJI’s website. It will be sold by other retailers, too, at “a later date”.

How much does the Osmo Mobile 6 cost?

It’s slightly more expensive than the OM 4 and OM 5 at $159 / £145 / €165.

This includes the gimbal, a table-top tripod, soft carry bag, power cable and wrist strap.

Accessories such as the Fill Light clamp, wireless DJI Mic and others are available, but add significantly to the Osmo Mobile 6’s price. You can also buy the magnetic clamp – the Magnetic Phone Clamp 3 – for $25.

What are the Osmo Mobile 6’s features?

The gimbal is roughly the same size as the OM 5 and weighs 340g. It uses a magnetic phone clamp which now accommodates larger phones, and means you shouldn’t have to remove your phone’s case before attaching the clamp.

The new display shows which of the four modes it is in, and pressing the M button toggles between them:

• Follow: Camera view follows the gimbal’s pan and tilt movements and stays level during rolls.
• Tilt Lock: Camera only follows the gimbal’s pan movement and stays stable during tilts and rolls — ideal for moving around a subject.
• FPV: In FPV mode, all three axes of the gimbal follow the handle movement.
• SpinShot: Push the joystick to the left or right to control the rotation of the camera for creative shooting.

The Quick Launch feature means that when you attach an iPhone to the Osmo Mobile 6, the Mimo app will display an alert so you can tap it to get straight into the camera view.

DJI doesn’t say whether this also works for Android phones.

ActiveTrack has been updated to version 5.0 which is said to improve tracking when the subject is further away. It also uses your phone’s front camera, allowing the gimbal to track subjects that turn to the side or spin.

The Osmo Mobile 6 has a built-in telescopic selfie stick like the OM 5 which allows you to get higher or closer to your subject.
