At Google’s last launch event, I/O 2024, the search giant revealed its plans for an AI-powered future, alongside the new Android 15 and wearOS 5 beta updates, plus the arrival of the Pixel 8a a few days before.
Now, we look towards when the next Google event will be and what you can expect to see launched. We’ve also outlined how to watch the Google Pixel 9 launch live stream.
When does Google usually hold events?
There are two times on the calendar when Google usually has its launch events. The first is around May/June, when the company holds its annual Google I/O developer conference.
This usually has a focus on software, with Google showing off what will be coming later in the year for Android and Wear OS, but it also has been when the cheaper Pixel ‘a’ phones are revealed, such as the Pixel 7a launched at the 2023 I/O event. That year also saw the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold announced at Google I/O.
The other is usually in October, called the ‘Made by Google’ event, when the main flagship Pixel phones get their yearly update with the arrival of new devices, plus other hardware launches such as the Pixel Watch.
For example, at the last Made by Google event in October 2023 we saw the introduction of the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Watch 2.
When will the next Google event take place?
Breaking the trend we covered above, Google has recently sent out invites for the 2024 Made By Google which will surprisingly take place on 13 August 2024.
A message sent out to tech press including Tech Advisor said “Google will showcase the best of Google AI, Android software and the Pixel portfolio of devices.”
Google has also put up a teaser trailer for the event on its YouTube channel.
What will Google announce at its next event?
While the event has taken many people by surprise, there definitely seems to be one product we can almost guarantee will be having the covers pulled off in August – the Google Pixel 9. In the teaser video above you can clearly see the outline of two phones, with the ‘IX’ Roman numerals for 9 being displayed.
This is bolstered by the fact that the URL on the Google page that holds the teaser trailer contains the words ‘google_pixel_9_pro’. So, this could either mean that the new Google Pixel 9 Pro is about to arrive ahead of its expected release date or that both the Pixel 9 and the Pro will make their debuts together (as is the normal pattern).
Whether the event also includes the devices we were anticipating arriving in October remains to be seen. But if it does, and it could well do, then we might also see the launch of the Google Pixel Fold 2 and Google Pixel Watch 3.
We’ve seen some rumours already of what these devices could be like, so here’s a whistlestop tour of what to expect from the class of 2024.
Google Pixel 9
OnLeaks x 91Mobiles
There’s not been a lot of information about the Pixel 9 out in the wild, but some of the most reliable ones we’ve seen are that the rear panel will get a new design that takes the camera bar and turns it into an island.
There should also be a 6.03-inch OLED 120HZ display, the same twin rear cameras, plus a new Google Tensor G4 chipset.
Google Pixel 9 Pro
OnLeaks x 91Mobiles
It’s unclear whether we’ll see one or two Pro devices this time around, as there are plenty of rumours that Google is preparing a Pixel Pro and a Pixel Pro XL. The former will feature a 6.1-inch OLED 120Hz display with a centre punch-hole camera, the same triple camera array on the rear, a new Google G4 Tensor chipset and dimensions measuring 152.8 x 71.9 x 8.5mm.
Google Pixel 9 Pro XL
The even bigger brother of the Pro, dubbed the XL, is expected to come in at 162.7 x 76.6 x 8.5mm, which makes it a big old bugger.
This should be powered by the new G4 Tensor chipset, and may come with a periscope telephoto sensor in its triple camera array, which some think will allow for a variable aperture. The display is reportedly going to be a 6.5-inch OLED 120Hz panel, which does make it actually smaller than the 6.7-inch display in the Pixel 8 Pro.
As the launch event teaser suggests, AI will be a central part of the Pixel 9 range, so we think this could mean that Google’s Gemini digital assistant comes as standard in the new phones. It already does on the new Motorola Razr 50 series.
The teaser video only shows the outline of one device so the XL feels far from certain.
Android 15
This feels unlikely, as Google usually works on Android up until October, with developer and public betas allowing for thorough testing of the new version of the system.
With that in mind, we think it’s more likely that the Pixels arrive with Android 14 but get priority for the new upgrade later in the year.
Google Pixel Fold 2
Jim Martin / Foundry
Rumours have been a bit scattergun regarding Google’s next foldable, but from what we’ve seen so far, expect dimensions of 155.2 x 77.1 x 10.54 mm when folded.
There’s thought to be a triple rear camera array on a new island like the Pixel 9 phones, and the display is reported as being 8.02-inch for the foldable section and 6.29-inch for the outer panel.
A G4 tensor is expected to power the new Fold, with 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 4.0 storage. A slightly bigger battery could also be on the cards, and there might be wireless charging this time.
Google Pixel Watch 3
91Mobiles x OnLeaks
There’s not expected to be much of a change in terms of design for the Pixel Watch 3. It could be thicker though, due to a larger 307mAh cell (the Pixel Watch 2 sports a 304mAh battery). The dimensions are reported at 40.79 x 40.73 x 14mm, compared to the 41 x 41 x 12.3mm of the Pixel Watch 2.
One interesting rumour is that the Watch 3 could come in two sizes (like the Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch), offering 41mm and a new 45mm. This would be great news for fans.
A new chipset looks to be on the cards, with Qualcomm confirming something along these lines last October.
Thankfully, due to Google’s surprise event announcement, we shouldn’t have to wait too long to find out what the company has been so diligently working on.
Google Pixel Buds Pro 2
There’s been almost no rumours about the Pixel Buds Pro 2, but Google could easily be preparing a new version for the August event.
The main upgrades we’d hope for would be upgraded ANC (Active Noise Cancelling) and improved battery life. We don’t know if this will happen, but it would be a nice surprise.
