The Average Salary for a Personal Trainer in the UK
The average pay for personal trainers in the UK is between £30-£40 per hour. But it’s important to bear in mind that many PTs will be self-employed, meaning they won’t have a fixed salary.
As a freelance personal trainer, how much you earn will depend on your working hours and the number of sessions you run. Generally, more sessions equal more money. But as a certified Level 3 personal trainer, you could charge a significantly higher rate and increase your pay scale while keeping your working hours down.
Let’s use an example of a personal trainer working with 10 clients who take an average of two sessions per week. This will create an annual income of £36,400 if we use this example with an average of £35 per hour.
This can obviously scale up or down depending on the number of clients you have. If you live in London, the average hourly rate for a personal training session is much higher, meaning you can generally achieve a higher wage in the city.
Ten clients at two sessions per week equates to 20 hours of personal training sessions; however, it’s more likely to be 25-30 hours per week, accounting for the time needed to fully build your clients’ plans. You will also want to plan in time to contribute to other aspects of your business, like marketing and financial planning.
Other Factors and Expenses Affecting the Average Personal Trainer Salary
How much personal trainers earn will increase further if you run an online service in addition to your face-to-face delivery.
Personal trainer salaries can also be influenced by whether or not they offer an online service. Some personal trainers will run online group sessions or one-to-ones in addition to in-person coaching. Others will exclusively operate online. Online sessions generally cost less to run and take less time, as there’s no need to account for travel time or expenses. As a result, online personal trainers may have a higher base salary and increased earning potential.
Other factors to consider include any software or apps you purchase to store your clients’ data or use to email them. It may also include things like advertising costs or accountancy costs. Your expenses will have a significant impact on your salary.
Our Experience of What The Fitness Group Graduates Earn
The Fitness Group graduates are personal trainers who have completed our accredited personal trainer courses. They came to us to streamline their professional development and complete the fitness assessments needed to pursue personal training career paths.
Most of our graduate fitness instructors have an average of 12 clients and 25 sessions per week by the end of 12 months. This number of clients and sessions generates an average personal trainer salary of:
- £45,000 for 25 sessions per week at £35 per hour
- £39,000 for 25 sessions per week at £30 per hour
- £52,000 for 25 sessions per week at £40 per hour
So how much can a personal trainer earn after becoming qualified with The Fitness Group?
For all of our graduates, their take-home pay varied depending on how much they charged per hour and how much they wanted to earn. Because as a personal trainer, you’re in charge of your earning potential.
But it does take time to build a client base to double figures, and we recommend working with at least 10 individual clients to achieve a decent salary.
On average, individual clients take two sessions a week, but some will want three sessions, and others might only want one per week.
How to Increase Your Earning Potential and Achieve a Significantly Higher Salary as a Self Employed Personal Trainer
We’ve helped tens of thousands of students become personal trainers, and we’ve found that most graduates manage to gain a handful of clients within the first few months. But it’s important to note that clients aren’t handed to you when you qualify, though! Finding potential clients, building a relationship with them and earning their trust is vital to gaining your first, fifth or tenth client. So you need to market your business effectively and ensure great customer service.
Once you’ve secured more clients, make sure you help them achieve great results. Five-star reviews will help you attract further business and build an online presence. Your reputation will be a key pillar to your long term success.
The Top 3 Factors That Will Affect Your Average Salary
1: Location
The amount you can charge per hour and the costs you need to prepare for will vary depending on your location.
In London, for example, the cost of a personal training session can sit anywhere between £75-£100+. However, in many cities across the UK, the average cost of PT sessions will sit in the bracket of £30-£40 per hour.
The price per session can also vary depending on the micro-region. If it is an affluent area, then the cost per session will be higher.
- Tip – Research your local area to see what personal trainers near you are charging for face-to-face personal training sessions. Specifically, look at any personal trainers you may know either personally or from following their online content and check what they are charging.
This will allow you to get a feel for their prices relative to both their location and your perceived opinion of their skill.
2: Education – Start with Passion!
The first step to becoming a personal trainer is to educate yourself and gain your personal training qualifications.
This is the start of your learning journey, and it is a vital first step. You need to develop the knowledge and skills required to make a difference to the lives of your clients.
Becoming a Level 3 personal trainer is the best way to increase your earning potential and position yourself as a professional that clients can trust.
So choose a personal trainer course from a reliable training provider that can support you on your journey.
- Tip #1 – To find personal trainer courses run by expert fitness professionals, start by looking at the training providers’ social media accounts, customer reviews and Trust Pilot. How a company engages with its customers online (and how its customers engage with the company) can give you a great insight into the level of customer satisfaction. The level of support you receive will be the key ingredient in your journey, so you want to make sure their existing customers feel supported.

Studying and becoming newly qualified takes time and effort, so you need to know that you’ll gain certification that meets the highest industry standards. You need to know that your qualifications will be highly regarded both nationally and internationally.
At The Fitness Group, Active IQ is our awarding body, and our courses are regulated by Ofqual. Active IQ is the leading awarding body in the UK, and their courses are recognised worldwide. We are a CIMSPA Employer Partner — CIMSPA is the Charted Body for the industry, and any students who complete our qualifications can register as CIMSPA practitioners when they complete our Level 3 Personal Training Course.
3: Invest in your Business!
We believe it’s so important to invest in your business right from the start. Not just financially, but with time and effort too. You need to believe in your ability to deliver an exceptional client experience and impressive results.
Choosing personal trainer courses that are highly regarded in the fitness sector is one of the best ways to invest in your new career, but it must not stop there.
As a personal trainer, you should constantly be growing your knowledge and committing to your professional development. When you continually grow your knowledge of the human body, training best practices and health and fitness research, you can make sure you’re one of the best freelance personal trainers in your area.
You can supercharge your business value and ensure the long-term success of your career in the fitness industry.
You’ll become a more sought after personal trainer, and gradually the demand for your services will grow. You’ll then be able to increase your per hour fees and overall salary steadily.
- Tip – Don’t view the qualifications you gain coming into the fitness industry as the first and last step in your education journey. Continuing to invest in your new business will lead to growing demand and a higher level of career earnings. Your investments will also lead to higher levels of satisfaction and intrinsic motivation.
Your clients’ results will grow as your experience grows, and your ability to market these services and results will get better as you learn. Thus you will attract more clients and you will be able to help more people!
