While Elon Musk is a prominent figure known for transforming the space, tech and automobile industry, his brother Kimbal Musk has made a name for himself as an entrepreneur, chef and philanthropist while focusing on creating sustainable food systems and building stronger communities.
Born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1972, Kimbal relocated to Kingston, Ontario, Canada to join Elon where he attended Tueen's University and graduated with a business degree in 1995. While attending his University, he worked at Scotiabank, where he became familiar with finance and business operations.
The Musk siblings (Kimbal, Elon and Tosca) were raised in a family with strong entrepreneurship roots. Their father, Errol Musk, is an electromechanical engineer and businessman from South Africa, and their mother, Maye Musk, is a Canadian model and dietician.
Kimbal co-founded Zip2, a software company offering business directories and maps for newspapers along with his brother Elon, which was a kick-start to his entrepreneurial journey. Kimbal achieved major success when the company was sold to Compaq for a whopping $307 million.
Kimbal then transitioned to the food sector, where his primary focus lied on sustainability and community development. He co-founded the Kitchen Restaurant Group, which runs farm-to-table restaurants all throughout the United States. His initiatives focus on sustainable, locally sourced food practices, which is consistent with his goal of transforming the food ecosystem.
As of 2021, Kimbal Musk’s estimated net worth is $700 million. His wealth is derived from profits from Zip2's sale, investments made in technology and food ventures, Kitchen Restaurant Group's success and philanthropic activities encouraging sustainable food systems.
