As the 119th United Congress convened in Washington DC on Friday, House Speaker Mike Johnson faced re-election again, with several members from his own Republican Party opting to vote against Johnson in the first round of votes. Democrats hit out at the GOP over the fallout, with Hakeem Jefferies, leader of the Democrats in the House, calling it a 'civil war.'

In the first round of votes, Johnson fell short of being re-elected by only two votes. The Associated Press reported that Johnson's allies in the House are talking to the GOP holdouts on the House floor trying to win them over in favour of Johnson.

Representative Keith Self Of Texas voted for Representative Byron Donalds of Florida for House Speaker.

Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky voted against Mike Johnson.

Representative Ralph Norman of South Carolina voted against Mike Johnson.
