Rich Paul says Bronny James would be in the NBA even if his name was John Smith ... downplaying all the critics' claims of nepotism playing a major role in LeBron James' son getting drafted to the Lakers.

Bron and Bronny's agent touched down at LAX on Friday -- just 24 hours after the rookie had his name called with the 55th pick in the draft.

Paul talked all about the highly-publicized selection for the Purple and Gold ... saying first and foremost, he's thrilled for the 19-year-old hooper -- 'cause he definitely deserved the opportunity.

Bronny James -- son of NBA superstar LeBron James -- is a Los Angeles Laker ... being selected with the 55th pick in the 2024 Draft.

This makes LeBron and Bronny the first-ever father-son duo in NBA history -- and they're on the same team.

The big moment went down minutes ago ... with league deputy commissioner Mark Tatum taking the dais at ESPN's Seaport District Studios in Manhattan to announce the move.

Bronny James might not have been one of the handful of prospects at the Barclays Center for the NBA Draft, but he's still living it up in the Big Apple this week ... getting spotted out in NYC prior to Wednesday's event.

Right around the same time Zaccharie Risacher, Alex Sarr, Ron Holland and the rest of the rookies were getting dressed to the nines ahead of the first round ... Bronny and his brother, Bryce, hopped out of an SUV decked out in stylish streetwear.

Britney Spears has not reconciled with her children, despite reports to the contrary.

Stories have surfaced 18-year-old Sean Preston and 17-year-old Jayden James have seen their mom and have been communicating for months. Sources with direct knowledge beg to differ.

We're told the kids have had one convo with Britney -- on Mother's Day, but that's it. As for Britney visiting her kids when she traveled to Hawaii several times this year ... we're told that's not true -- the kids have not seen her for nearly 3 years.

Gena Rowlands -- most famous from "The Notebook" -- is sadly battling Alzheimer's disease ... a heartbreaking update after she portrayed a key character with the same disease.

The actress' son and 'Notebook' director Nick Cassavetes shared the news Tuesday with Entertainment Weekly -- this while celebrating the 20th anniversary of his beloved and iconic romance flick ... which he directed and his mother starred in as Allie in old age.

NC says ... "I got my mom to play older Allie, and we spent a lot of time talking about Alzheimer's and wanting to be authentic with it, and now, for the last five years, she's had Alzheimer's. She's in full dementia. And it's so crazy -- we lived it, she acted it, and now it's on us."

Paul Mitchell's son's death remains shrouded in mystery -- because even though we now know how he died ... it's still unclear exactly what led up to it, and why.

Tragedy struck Roy Jones Jr.'s family over the weekend ... as the boxing legend's son, DeAndre, died by suicide, TMZ Sports has learned.

55-year-old Jones Jr. released a statement on the heartbreaking loss on Monday ... saying, "Unfortunately, my son DeAndre took his life on Saturday."

Jones Jr. went on to say he was with DeAndre the night before his passing.
